Daft Punk, but only Random Access Memories. So many people are claiming that the album's fucking revolutionary, when it just seems like a average version of Discovery with too many goddamn guest stars. If you want real disco Daft Punk, listen to Discovery. That in my opinion is one of the funkiest albums to ever be made.

I used to be into shitty house/EDM, then I discovered BoC and everything changed, etc. Nevertheless, I still don't get how people like Deadmau5. Like, have you heard most of his tracks? Fucking 4/4 beat, same snare, every fucking time! Yet he's so famous and acclaimed. Maybe it's just because I don't like EDM anymore, but I just don't get it!

Fuck the Strokes.

Coldplay is no longer a good band IMO.

Their earlier stuff before they got super popular is excellent IMO. Isaac has never been a good singer, but it worked on the earlier stuff because it sounds like it's coming from his heart. Like all of The Lonesome Crowded West is pretty much one giant angry rant about urbanization, a really good album.

I didn't get carried away by the hype, and I've given it two rather thorough listens so far. To me, it seems like there are a few very weak tracks that bring the overall experience down (cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumooon, cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumon cumooon). Lose Yourself to Dance is one of the most boring things I have ever heard. But there are quite a few gems in it, and I enjoyed it overall. But I agree that Discovery is much, much stronger.

maybe it's just the crowd i run with but pretty much all i've been hearing is that RAM is a total disappointment. i agree, i fell like it's mostly a sadly anemic tribute to already watery 70s AM gold/soft rock

yeah... i only have one Modest Mouse album and it's that. it's an awesome album. as cliché as it sounds, I am not really interested in the stuff that came after.

and I've also never understood Daft Punk as a band that one would actually listen to, I understand how it's fun to dance too, in clubs etc. but that's about it. their sound just feels really generic too me.

as far as French bands I really like Air.

But all kidding aside I don't know what I'd do without the good stuff the UK imports. Most of my musical loves are from there so if some riff raff makes it through who am I to complain . It's so lopsided that I'm rather pleased when a band I discover that I really like happens to be from the US. Which is hard to explain, it's not so much a national pride because I'm really not nationalistic in such ways, it's just nice partly because it is a rare experience for me.

I've never really managed to get into many of the "classic" musicians from the 60's and 70's. I've heard a few songs here and there from Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Springsteen etc.. but never found anything that appeals to me. Classic Rock bores me, i'm not into any 70's disco or anything like that, basically a large portion of the most revered 60's and 70's music.

That being said, i do love a lot of music from the 70's such as This Heat, Can, Kraftwerk, XTC, Wire, a lot of the punk scene, post-punk, krautrock, industrial (throbbing gristle, suicide etc..).

Basically not into a lot of the 'classics'.
I guess my question is Am I really missing out?

it sounds like you're already listening to the "classic" musicians which found OUR type of tastes, your Bob Dylans, Led Zeppelins, Springsteens, while important, probably only influenced your average butt rock or pop punk band.

Sure their influences seep into everything, like how any rock which is vaguely psychedelic these days is called Beatles-esque, but if we're talking about bands like Radiohead, MBV, and good indie rock, they're probably more or less influenced by no wave, noise and avant garde scenes of the 70's and 80's.

As I said, it sounds like you already listen to the classics.

Bibio really does nothing for me.

I know there are a lot of fans of his on here, I see his name get thrown around a lot, but I just don't get it.

I love the guy, he's one of my favorites, and honestly I didn't expect to feel that way and didn't at first so I get it. I think really the bottom line with music is it either moves you or it doesn't. I dislike most folk music, but I love fleet foxes for some reason. There is just something different enough in their sound, their ornamentation and melody that works for me. Same thing is true for Bibio. I think they remind me of music I heard off in the distance on a summer day playing outside as a child. But mostly I like straight up electronic music. So in a way these are outliers for me.

So I guess getting it isn't really as important as feeling it.

I just don't get....why the evolution of dubstep just stopped somewhere suddenly....

Yeah, completely agree. I should like it, it has all the ingredients I usually look for in music and he's a talented chap, but something just doesn't gel with me and his music. I got Ambivalence Avenue when it came out, listened to it a few times and never went back to it for some reason. I dug it out again yesterday for the first time in years and still meh. Can't pin point it, not sure if it's something about his melodies or production or what? Just leaves me a bit empty.

I totally get it. I'm that way about autechre. I can appreciate their sound design but I can't feel it. It just ends up being like mental masturbation for me although I recognize how much they are pulling out of their equipment. I'm amazed by what they do but don't care for it much. I feel completely different about aphex twin. Him I feel.

I might be throwing some sort of spanner in the works here, but I'd say IDM for the last decade or so.

is it just me or has IDM gone to the dogs? all the once untouchable figureheads (in my opinion) have fallen, Squarepusher, Plaid, Autechre, even BoC though not the extent of the former 3.

And new IDM artists which seemed to have taken their place aren't doing anything interesting or really good. At all. A lot of flashy boring production with go nowhere melodies. Nothing's exciting any more.

That's why my end of year lists have moved further and further from electronic, the music that I used to thrive on is now uninteresting and bleh.

Bring on the juke, footwork and wonky genres imo, IDM is dead.

Traditional country music. I just can't stand it.
