That's pretty funny and in the US there is an OBVIOUS correlation. But I'm curious as to how they came up with the "religion very important" percentage..

Agreed...that's a subjective and fairly uncertain qualifier. Also, I think it's important to consider the possibility that, while individuals of lower intelligence (as measured by IQ, that is) may have a higher propensity for religiosity, it seems possible that high religiosity may, conversely, impair intelligence. So, there could be multiple factors involved.

This isn't meant to be an insult to anyone here in any way...just an observation.

Read into that what you will. Would be nice to have some data over the 110 IQ mark, though.
This graph made me laugh so much    .... there are countries in which the average IQ of its inhabitants have an IQ of around 70, and also, it's not just one country. You know, someone with an IQ of 70 may be considered "mental retarded" (also affected by other factors, boundary of 70 is a crude method).

So concluding: according to this graph there are countries in which the average citizen is retarded.... well I'm a believer, but this I don't believe. (Love to see where this data came from, guess it's not Nature or Science)

Furthermore, the IQ has a "normal distribution", don't know much about statistics, but I do know that therefore only 2,5% of a (normalized) population has an IQ of 70 or below....

But hey, you made my day. Would love to know which countries are that retarded (apart from it's politics  )

The graph came from this study.

Additionally, I personally feel that IQ alone is a poor measure of overall intellectual capacity, so I take all of this with a grain of salt.

For anyone not familiar, a normal distribution could roughly be described as a symmetrical bell curve in which the mean, median and mode are the same value (and to which the Empirical Rule would apply). I'm still amazed by how well a wide variety of data is represented in a normal distribution (IQ, height, photon distribution, financial variables, etc).

Hmm... maybe I spoke too soon, sorry, it seems a legitimate study (as far as I can see, and that doesn't seem to be far ;)).

Still wonder about the mentally retarded countries, an average IQ of 70 seems to be quite low??? As you said Skytree, IQ may not be the best measure, but it gives some indication, and well, an average of 70 is not very high....

I don't think countries with its average citizens being retarded do exist, so I guess I put the wrong things together.... Anyone care to shed some light on it?

The answer to that is very complex, I'm sure. But, this excellent article from the NY Times may help shed some light on your question.

Excerpt:
“Bad environments suppress children’s I.Q.’s,” Professor Turkheimer said.

One gauge of that is that when poor children are adopted into upper-middle-class households, their I.Q.’s rise by 12 to 18 points, depending on the study. For example, a French study showed that children from poor households adopted into upper-middle-class homes averaged an I.Q. of 107 by one test and 111 by another. Their siblings who were not adopted averaged 95 on both tests.
I think that the latent potential of humanity, if given the right conditions to flourish, could put our modern culture to shame. No gene modification or other nonsense required.

I don't know what to believe, so my perception is that all the goodness in the world should come from people themselves. For me, it has nothing to do with God. I also think God is not goal. It's a tool to act kind and hold up morale for oneselve. Nothing wrong with that.

..Matthew, Mark, Luke (Gospel of Luke and Acts), John (Revelation). They may not like the idea but to a Christian eternal damnation for the unbeliever is real. It can't be ignored.

And we've said nothing about your beliefs. The problem is with belief itself and mindless devotion to potentially dangerous religious dogma. But it seems you aren't even a true Christian (ignoring your idea of what it means to be Christian) so I don't really think we need to have this conversation anymore and I mean that in a very geniune and nice way. Seriously :)
Really, can't be ignored, sure. But it can be interpreted in many ways.. Damned = a life without God, you know.

Wake up fella. First you say: we've said nothing about your beliefs, then you say: it seems you aren't even a true Christian (ignoring your idea of what it means to be Christian). So you do say stuff about my believe. It's so easy to talk about other believes, it keeps focus away from the tough questions about your own beliefs. I dare you to question them. I bet they're not more solid as my or any other believe.

I was complementing you on being a good person and not stoning homosexuals or murdering thousands in the name of your lord. I'm done talking to you about a religion you know nothing about. Continue to "believe" (in whatever the hell you've decided to believe in), thinking that's enough to make you Christian.. I really don't care. I was trying to be nice with my last few posts but now I'm done. And stop trying to convince me that my beliefs are as ridiculous and unfounded as yours. I have no beliefs. I have reality and reason.

i've long known that if i ever get locked up in a looney bin "for the greater good" it will be because of my strong atheistic disbelief, however secular, in the ability of any human to attain 'reality and reason', and i'll be dragged there kicking and screaming by a group of people who are certain they have attained the secular nirvana of 'total rationality'.

fuck you, society, and fuck the new religion of reason. i'm not a follower. the so-called 'enlightenment' can suck my hairy third nut.

Nice? Nahh, you failed. The sad thing is that you didn't know where you failed.
With every new post, you show an arrogant attitude. You seem to know anything about our faith, but in reality you don't know nothing. It's a single minded approach to bash an entire religion because of actions of a few. I can continue to repeat myself, but I choose to not do that.
You have no beliefs you say? What's your point posting on this topic then? I know you have a lot of beliefs, values and morals, which sound like a religion to me. You know, you don't have to believe in a god to be religious? And you seem to have a strong faith in what you believe in. You believe in reality and reason..

And please mate, stop proving my point with your posts.

I'm not bashing religion because of the actions of a few. I'm bashing it because of the scripture itself and the ignorance of it's "followers". And yes I'm arrogant. I have no problem admitting that :) The world would be a much better place without believers. And I do know what you believe. I was a devout Christian until high school when I woke up.

I can't believe I'm the only one that understands that religion and "organized religion" are the same fucking thing.
