...is really great! Definitly the kind of thing I'd love to be able to make

It's really hard to say. Sadly there's no free way to write tunes at this point as far as I know, not efficiently at least (Unless you want to use a tracker, which is pretty crappy for ambient tunes) so unless you've got some money for maybe FL Studio or Reaktor 5 the whole "synthesized sound" deal isn't going to really happen, at least not how you'd like it to. If you've got Reaktor by chance, there's a lot you can do with granular processing of guitar. On my Myspace the song "Saltfjelvoca" is all guitar for the melody, running through Reaktor 5 with some distortion and what-not.

My setup consists of a 130$ preamp to run guitar through the computer as an input device, running as an input through the FL Studio Mixer to an instance of Reaktor 5 as an effect. For that sort of setup it ran me about 1000$ total, but Reaktor 5 alone is worth it because of how versatile it is, though it certainly isn't as multifunctional as, say MaxMSP, but it's much more accessible.

And thanks, I'm hoping to add onto that track but for now I feel the minimal nature is the most important factor of the song so I'm just going to leave it be, exception being a few tweaks here and there perhaps. Probably not going to add any more to it.

OK. Since my last post, I was determined to make something new. After banging my head against my desk for a few hours, I eventually calmed down (deadline stress) and put down four simple guitar chords. Some pattern making, some reversing, and one distorted midi sample later, we have a possible basic track. In my mind, it would function as a teaser/ sort of like 'Ready Lets Go'.


Any advice/ comments appreciated

really nice track, it definitely has a lot of potential - i would extend the strings towards the end of the track. i could see an extra 2-3 minutes added on easily.

i agree this is loaded with potential, it is very ponderous and just... a very good starting point. it is already eliciting some of those bottom-of-the-belly feelings, just arousing them just a little, and if you added a few very subtle little things, like the tweaky bleep of a very very lo-pass filtered analog synth here or there with waves of reverb, or a lonely little synth melody that kind of crawls into the song then curls up and dies right away... muah! perfecto!

Rise Ohmic Colony. This is the longest track I've finished in quite a while (6:17). Hope you guys enjoy it.

Really enjoy your new one, Cole. Reminds me of a great Odd Nosdam interlude, though a bit more spacey. Nice manipulation of sound going on here...lovely little layers.

Haha...I was listening to Cole's track for a second time while this downloaded, and they both started playing simultaneously. I was floored by the result! Give it a try...same key and everything. Instant collab.

As the track stands alone, it's got an excellent vibe to it. I'm not so keen on the lowered bitrate of the guitar, but it definitely works in the context of what I mentioned above! Great little vignette for just a few hour's work man.

Edit: Actually, just decided to layer the two and post it here, if you guys don't mind. Cole's bit comes in around 0:46. Added a bit of reverb to s7409651's piece, to make it wash in/out a bit more smoothly. Haha...this is officially my first mashup, if you want to call it that...didn't take much effort! The combination gives me chills...

As I said in AIM... awesome start. love the percussion and the way it interacts with the atmospherics of the track so far.
