It's not impossible that the band/someone connected with them, bought those tapes. I remember Mark Lanegan buying back one of his old demo tapes from a seller on eBay.

Lanegan probably just turned up and scowled at them with those gunslinger eyes...

Is MikeP "Bambi" on WATMM? Regardless, Bambi had this to say on WATMM:

"I've come to an arrangement to exchange the 3 tapes for something the buyer can offer which is mutually beneficial to everyone, hopefully. No money changing hands. It is pretty exciting though."

Ha! This HAS to be Warp or MDG coming up with a deal, surely???

I imagine they'd just politely ask for them to be taken down if they were worried about this auction, rather than buying them back.
Yes but you're not the wife of Mike Paradinas, owner of Planet Mu. Pretty sure they would be more than happy to respect the band's wishes and shut down the auction if they were asked to.

An agreement to release some unreleased material on Planet Mu?

Well, I was ready to pay whatever.

I'm slightly ticked that the auctions were ended without being able to give a second offer, but oh well.

Life goes on, new album almost here and all that.

I too was ready to have a punt on at least one of them, but kind of glad they have gone away. Saved me (us ) a shed load of cash.

I doubt Mike and his wife are millionaires. Maintaining mutual respect and good relations with a band that's not even on your label doesn't pay the bills.

What an interesting post! Maybe it was Warp that intervened then.

What would Warp have to offer them that isn't money? Since Warp doesn't own any of the old material, as far as I'm aware, they don't have much of a stake in the matter otherwise. It seems semi-clear to me that what he's hinting at is an agreement between the band and Planet Mu to give a proper release to the material on those tapes, or possibly even earlier stuff (Play by Numbers, etc.). That would be a lucrative offer to any small label, and would certainly be mutually beneficial to everyone.

The 'buyer' is a fan, that's all Mike can disclose. No one from related labels or BoC contacted us about any of the tapes.
Looks like we're both wrong.

what goes around comes around, better to not burn bridges.

someones wide awake. i saw 'avoid red face' all over the sellers statement. no money changed hands, damn right it didn't.

case closed. i don't work for Warp or Police btw.

Then I'm especially curious what he had in mind by "mutually beneficial for everyone". I keep coming back to previously unreleased material, but I can't imagine what the source of it would be if not the band itself, or how it would be beneficial to Planet Mu if they can't legally release it (and they obviously couldn't and wouldn't without the band's permission).

Perhaps baby clothes and a pram were offered instead of cash.

Will someone clue me in? What does Planet Mu have to do with this? I haven't followed rumors, interviews, etc. with regard to Mike/Planet Mu in years.

The auction was hosted by the wife of Mike Paradinas. Together they operate the Planet Mu label.

It's an odd statement and could mean quite a few things.
To be honest I think that they will disappear into the ether and we'll hear nothing more.
Only good things to come of this would then be the decent cover images and the knowledge of more tapes out there.

Baring in mind that cash was the reason for the sale, now for it to be pulled for the benefit of others? mmm

Planet Mu has nothing to do with it, other than it being Mike's record label.
