You answered your own question. Yes if you play the record over and over and over it will wear down irrespective of the weight, 140/180 may last slightly longer but at that stage does it even matter? If you're rinsing your record every single day it's going to lose a lot of fidelity regardless. It also is a marketing plot to some degree, its a relatively recent development in the world of vinyl. If they sound good, which these new ones definitely do, then that should be all that matters.

I know its annoying, we all paid for 140 pressings but its nice to have re-represses at all. Most companies would just send out another bad pressing and not do anything about it.

About three months after the announced shipment date I finally receive the EP-bundle today. Records look/sound fine, but then I notice... no print!? I preorder and wait all this time and I don't even get the promised print! WTF! They also forgot to send me a replacement for the second TCH disc which I now hear isn't 140g at all. If you make an offer, you deliver on that offer. If not, you've got some explaining to do. This whole affair has been a crappy farce from beginning to end. I'm disappointed :(

No, vinyl's weight isn't just a a marketing gimmick. Yes, a lot of record labels just press CD sourced material into poorly recycled PVC weighting 180gm and call it 'audiophile'.
This is a matter of physics, it's not a whim. Of course you can have a worse sounding press on a 120gm LP than on a 200gm one, but that is like saying that horsepower is only a gimmick, a 60bhp car is surely different from a 200bhp, even though on some cases you could find a better 60bhp vehicle that doesn't prove that it's all the same.

The physics are pretty obvious. The groove that is cutted on a vinyl isn't linear, it changes it shape according to the audio and naturally on a heavoer vinyl you can cut deeper and a deeper cut means more information. Moreover grooves can affect eachother creating a pre-echo effect. If you care about any of this you can check this nice video of Matt Colton talking about cutting vinyl:

got my replacements last week. the eps checked out, as well as the new campfire headphase. however, the geogaddi album (the full and still sealed album) had the same audio distortion issues with:
B3 Julie And Candy
D4 A Is To B As B Is To C
D5 Over The Horizon Radar
E4 Corsair

I was able to get an original 2002 pressing, and i can confirm that it wasn't anything on my part (e.g. stylus) but in deed the repressing.

I now have 3 copies of the repressing and all 3 have the same issues. therefore i think everyone who got the repressing should check their copy and check tracks B3, D4 and D5 (E4 corsair seems to be a given, considering they repressed this one).

btw, the re-repressed LP3 (Matrix / Runout: BD36640-01 E1) was not included in the latest sealed copy they sent me

I've sent bleep audio samples of the issues (as well as the corresponding original 2002 pressing samples as a cross-reference). If anyone is interested, i'll put them up on soundcloud.

Anyone know where to get the corrected versions in the US? Shipping here from Bleep for a couple of records is like 50 million dollars.

Also got today the TCH replacement, with brand new and sealed copies of MHTRTC and Geogaddi, I don't know why I got those two, but I guess I'll keep them as xmas gifts for some friends.

The TCH replacement was really pressed on a awfullly flimsy vinyl.

BS, these are 120g not 140g which the October pressings were. Absolute Crap!

yea, solve issues such as trying to save money on vinyl from a previous cock up. that is the truth of it.

If you can prove yours is 120g then they iwll probably replace it again - seeing as they said that their acceptable margin of error is 5g.

exactly, i'll get them weighed asap, but its a no brainer, very noticeable weight difference, more than 5gm.

I doubt any of us would notice a 5g difference

Non-fill was an issue in 70's and even in the 80's when manufacturers wanted to save money by using as less plastic as possible. I don't get that explanation from Warp.

Ok, I just received the most peculiar package in the mail today.

I did not get the mail telling me that those records were dispatched on February 24th so this coming in the mail today was quite a surprise. However I'm puzzled.

I had been told by the guy from the customer service that I would get new copies of The Campfire Headphase, Twoism and Trans Canada Highway. I also mentioned that I had a problem on Geogaddi but he told me they were still investigating the distortion problem on Corsair and weren't sure if they'd be able to do something about it. So I was expecting to receive new pressings of Campfire Headphase, TCH and Twoism.

The thing is, that's not what I got. Campfire Headphase is here, white inner sleeves, and matches the description of that discogs page http://www.discogs.com/Boards-Of-Canada ... se/5483827 (i.e. both records recut, I checked the Matrix numbers). TCH EP is there as well, though this one was in its sleeve, unopened, complete with sticker and download card : the Matrix number is different than on my other copy so I'm assuming it's the repress, but so far I'm not sure.

No the weird part is, they haven't sent me Twoism, no they sent me a complete, sealed copy of Geogaddi, for some reason. And I just checked the Matrix number on side E, and it's the same as the old one, so this one's definitely not the repress.

I haven't listened to any of them yet as I just checked my mail and opened the package, but I'll send them a mail. There's obviously been a fuckup somewhere.

Man this just gets better and better.

the Geogaddi they sent me for the 2nd time had still got the Corsair issue. [edit - 3rd version sent this month seems fine]

Now for the spanner in the works. Has anyone actually weighed the pressings from last October? I mean, for 140g they seemed good and solid didn't they? I presumed ok, 140g is the nice in between and a lot of techno 12" eps i have are lighter.

The pressings i have here that are much heavier than these Feb 2014 repressings are coming in at 165g? and the latest vinyls now are 135g?

There is no doubt a huge weight difference and not a 5g difference.

I dont have a 180g Geogaddi original anymore but if they weigh as is then your repress is a close 165g, better than 140g

Ive just told them to go weigh theirs against the October pressings, they cannot say they are 5g apart, ill resend both of my copies back to prove it. They can say well theyre close to 140g but what about those we got last year?

If im weighing these wrong, it still answers it that theyre 30g apart

discogs have listed 2 versions of this for 2014, one with just 1 vinyl recut but 2nd vinyl same cut and on 120gm vinyl
but then another listed as both vinyls recut but says nothing about weight? perhaps these are heavier?

i better check the matrix numbers tomorrow.

Discogs tends to go berserk about listing discrepancies and alternate versions. If something has a tiny blemish on it, it gets a new listing on the site!!

Isn't this just because some Bleep customers got only one record in a plain sleeve mailed to them? Anyone buying the record outright now would get both new records. That doesn't mean the version with only 1 recut was ever distributed like that. It's what Bleep customers who already bought it and got one replaced ended up with, right?

yes it seems discogs listings are been dictated by bleep reports etc. the '120g' is definitely recut on all vinyls, there arent odd ones.

to put this to bed, the vinyls we are receiving now are in fact the 140g and what we all got last october were 'overweight' by about 25g, odd. having said that, ive taken out a 180g double vinyl album here, not BOC. one weighs 175, other 167g, minor that but interesting. of course its going to be hard to get 2 exact weights, 5-10g is a minor margin tbh but 25-30g!

perhaps what happened with the audio issues were when they cut them for a 140g setting onto 160-165g vinyls, maybe? im no vinyl cutting expert.

I submitted the one with both records recut on discogs.

I don't have an apparatus to weigh if the vinyl is 120g so did not include that morsel.

Discogs tends to go berserk about listing discrepancies and alternate versions. If something has a tiny blemish on it, it gets a new listing on the site!!
'twas hardly an anal submission!, fresh cut BoC vinyl with new matrix numbers on Sides C/D...

God help future generations of BoC collectors having to wade through this mess to find the good sounding vinyl. I guess most will just pluck for the first pressings rather than bother figuring it out.

Ok, so I listened to the releases I got in the mail. As expected, the extra Geogaddi is just a standard Geogaddi with the issues on side E, so now I have an extra copy.

Both new copies of Trans Canada and Campfire Headphase sound awesome though. Apart from a strange click on the first five rotations of a couple of tracks on Campfire (if I mention it it's because it's very specific, it goes "click" five times, once for each rotation, and then goes away never to be heard again) the pressing is much cleaner. Farewell Fire doesn't sound like I'm frying eggs on a pan right beside the turntable anymore. Trans Canada is even cleaner, the Odd Nosdam remix in particular sounds gorgeous (which is great considering it was the track that is most affected on my other copy).

So sent a mail yesterday, and in another testament to Warp's kickass PR staff, I got a response almost instantaneously, very friendly... The missing vinyls are going to be sent this weekend, so I'll most likely get them in the mail next week. So I have to say once again that I'm impressed with Warp's customer service, their handling of this problem (especially considering how disastrous it must be for them, financially speaking) is top notch, and unlike that of any other label I've had to deal with regarding similar problems (looking at you PIAS).
