Clarification: I'm not referring to the subject matter I shouldn't even try to get involved in, I'm referring to "SHOWBIZ EXCLUSIVE" and the fact that Simon Fuckface is still paid any attention to.

basically ive got to get 68% overall this year at uni and im trying to work out if i can afford to not do three things that i really dont want to do

so i have all these modules worth 20 credits and assessed like this..:

lesson a - 70% one essay and 30% another
lesson b - 60% one essay and two of the three things i dont want to do - 30% and 10% presentations
lesson c - 25% one essay and 75% another
lesson d - 70% one essay 30% another
lesson e - 35% one essay, 50% another and the third of three things i dont want to do - 15% presentation
lesson f - one essay 70% and 30% another

so my question is, what average mark would i need to get on the essays if i ditched all the presentations in order to achieve 68% for the year? or what is the minimum? sorry its such a long post but the percentages have really confused me :s :s :s :s :s

I opened the discussion last night with Mrs Mexi. My position is clear: if the Scots go indie and the Tories / UKIP get into bed with each other, I'm heading North for the sake of my daughter. I kid you not.

I'd say there's a good chance.

General Election in May. Labour still looking likely winners, despite the so-called positive signs from the economy (prediction - it'll go tits up again next year, the growth isn't sustainable in my view). The Tories will continue to lurch to the right and in an attempt to shore up the right wing home county nutjobs will either (a) form an alliance with UKIP or (b) move further to the right to achieve the same aim.

If the Daily Mail cranks start pulling the strings more than they already do then I fear for us to be honest, especially if I'm right and the economy faceplants again in the next 12/24 months. Strange and scary things could then start to happen..

Equally, I can see educated left of centre people wondering whether a newly independant Scotland might do a little better in the long run. Perhaps they won't spunk the £35Billion a year in oil and gas revenues up the wall like Westminster has? Perhaps this brave new nation will genuinely try to promote and encourage according to ability and not because someones daddy went to Eton? While I'm sure it won't be all sweetness and light, I'd be willing to take a punt on a vibrant, young nation fueled by hope and passion, rather than one mired in a desire to somehow go back to 1950 and 'send Johnny Foreigner back where he came from.'

You'd need to get 75% in all your other classes and that's assuming full marks on the rest of the class that you skip presenting for. If you get a more realistic 68% of the remaining 60% of lesson B and 68% of the remaining 85% of lesson E (in other words 40.8% and 57.8% respectively for those lessons), you're required to get an average of 82% in everything else to make your overall 68% average.

In other words its a massive gamble and you're as well doing the talks and getting what you can.

Don't doubt yourself though. Public speaking and presentation is a skill worth suffering to gain, as someone who used to experience quite bad anxiety and can now speak to an audience without much stress I feel quite well positioned to tell you that with confidence. The key is to practice your presentation and talk all throughout the writing process and then multiple times after competition. Mirror not required if you can find a friend to give you feedback. Nobody who is good at public speaking does not do this.

You can see my point - 1 credit => 10 hours. Total of 27.5% of 40 credits given for presentation I.e. 11 credits. Or 110 hours. For what can't be more than 1h30 of actual presenting.

If you wanna continue fiddling the numbers then there's a simple equation to work out your required average for the other 4 lessons -

408 ÷ ( 400 + percentage expected for lesson B essay + percentage expected for lesson E essays ) = required average.

But honestly. If you value your degree and want to learn the most useful professional skill there is, get over this hurdle. You will be so much better off for it.

Re UKIP threat - I don't think they're a genuine threat as they are. What they are doing is pushing the Tories (predictably) and the political consensus (worryingly) to the right. What I HOPE - and the Scottish referendum could help whichever way it goes* - is that if that happens, the Labour party take the opportunity to become a genuine left wing alternative. There is a lot of support for things like nationalisation of utilities/railways - genuinely socialist ideas that many voters might not even see as "socialist" (which has become a bit of a bad word for many) - Labour should rise to it and get radical.

(* - I think whichever way the referendum goes, it will be tight and should lead to a lot of questions as to why so many are so disengaged and disenfranchised with Westminster politics. The Yes campaign has had a real sense of momentum and grass roots support - Westminster should look at this and see a need for a change in the political landscape UK-wide).

In light of this I've just sent an email asking if I can change those two modules for something with less participation. To be honest I'm a different person at uni than in the rest of my life. Even in college I would actively participate. But there's something about uni that I can't fucking stand being involved with. I'm much happier left alone to work by myself.
