shit, at this point I'd settle for a low-quality, unlabeled MP3, with just a 30 second snippet of a new song.bleak. wrote:i sure hope they become as active with their releases as autechre.
I just take offence with your general tone. You are very condescending and rude. We don't come here to be lectured regardless of your credentials. And I think you've got this all wrong if you believe people here think it's 'cool' to 'not care about the general trajectory of our society.' In the 3 years I've been on this forum, not once have I got that impression from anyone.SonicDimension wrote:How would you know? And I never said I was 'smart,' anyway. I'm sorry if I flipped out a bit there, but I get really ticked by people who think they are 'cool' for not caring about the overall trajectory of our society. Apathy is not cool. The Friendly Stranger wrote:Try taking your own advice. You're not half as smart as you appear to think you are.SonicDimension wrote:Wow, some people need to pull their heads out of their asses and take a look around.
Christ, some people are fucking dense.

No, I just saw a few people express their personal viewpoint that they would rather BoC made an album which didn't focus on this theme.SonicDimension wrote:A couple of people seemed to be implying that making a record with any reference to apocalypse would automatically be lame and disappointing-- as if the apocalypse were just the latest trend and it has no larger cultural significance worth addressing in art.
Yes, because people love this kind of drama and fantasy as it helps them to remove themselves from the painful reality that their lives are incredibly boring.SonicDimension wrote:Do you really think people would be obsessed with the Mayan calendar, survivalism, and other such nonsense if our culture were totally stable and nowhere near collapsing?
I agree, but I don't think that those who don't want to see these themes in a new BoC album are automatically ignorant people who don't care about the future of the human race.SonicDimension wrote:Who knows where BoC will go next, but I will not be surprised if we do end up hearing a darker record that is influenced by the general mood of the last several years (including the obsession with apocalpyse).
That is quite believable, yes. Journals are often written to prove a particular theory and research can be carefully selected and manipulated to support that one particular theory. Do you honestly believe that all journals and research papers written on this subject support this one viewpoint? Reading up on a subject doesn't make you 'right', especially when you have such heavy bias towards one line of reasoning.SonicDimension wrote:Or maybe it's a simple explanation of why you don't have to consider other peoples' ideas so that you can continue to feel comfortable and safe. Besides, I don't pay attention to the mainstream news media. I get my information from the source. So tell me, are academic and professional journals filled with 'sensationalist bullshit' research? The Friendly Stranger wrote:Please watch this. It's a simple explanation of exactly why you shouldn't buy into any of this sensationalist bullshit.
Look, I'm not going to get sucked into a 'last word' battle with you, I didn't even want to debate this with you in the first place. I'm just not interested, not in this issue but in debating it with you or anyone else for that matter. You're clearly better informed than I am but that's certainly no reason for me to blindly accept what you're saying because as you said yourself our viewpoints can be partially or totally formed by 'subjective experiences and interpretations of events.'SonicDimension wrote:Actually most research journals (and the scientific method itself) have very rigorous methods for weeding out individual biases and crank theories. It's true that these publications promote certain cultural biases, such as the belief that the scientific method and deductive logic are the best ways to study various problems, but I doubt that you take issue with that. The Friendly Stranger wrote:That is quite believable, yes. To go from studying these problems in a disinterested, academic manner to taking a political/ideological position does require some meta-analysis which is likely to involve one's subjective experiences and interpretations of events, but whatever conclusions you reach, the facts remain the same. Thinking happy thoughts and proceeding with business as usual will not make our problems evaporate.
