The original Wip3out soundtrack. Also, Tempest X for the Ps1. Oh yeah, Fez and VVVVVV. Balloon Fight's balloon trip? God, there are so many. Shadow of the Beast for Amiga? Megaman games? They all dominate my childhood.

Anything and everything Nobuo Uematsu ever did, like BOC he is very melody driven and his music makes an impact on nearly everyone who picks up one of the games he composed for.

Totally agree about Ecco the Dolphin (1 and 2) Those soundtracks are some of my favourite music of all time. I used to record the music from genesis games out of my TV speakers into a cassette deck. I still have them kicking around somewhere.

And the games themselves, in terms of concept and storyline, are brilliant. It blew my mind as a 7 year old. time travel? sentient oceans? floating islands and water tubes? highly evolved telepathic levitating dolphins? ALIENS? it blends sci-fi and nature in one of the coolest ways ever.

A lot of the time when I tell people about it I get the "a game about dolphins lol that sounds lame" reaction but, seriously, watch this playthrough to get an idea of the music and the story:



I'm fairly certain any BoC fan will appreciate it, and not just for the music.

This is a little off topic but, I think that many of the composers for that generation of consoles perhaps inadvertently helped bridge the gap with electronic music. They obviously had pretty limited parameters to work with in terms of technology, which forced them into other avenues of creating sounds and melodies. a lot of soundtracks got really creative with it and made some wonderful innovative things. It makes me wonder if it can be considered an offshoot, or perhaps precursor of electronica.

Also a lot of the composers had to have grown up with 60s-70s music, so interesting to think about in terms of a common influence and how it relates to BoC. Personally, I think the Ecco soundtracks have BoC sounding stuff all throughout, which probably explains in part why I'm so taken with their sound.

anywho. tldr; video game music is some of the best electronica and ecco the dolphin is fucking awesome.

tetris had some pretty awesome music for only 8 bits.



the video game series Medal Of Honor had pretty outstanding music. im not really sure if this counts though because the music wasnt really video game music, it was more like world war II type, with orchestras and such. really beautiful music though. it fit the game absolutely perfectly.

The original Metroid for NES for certain still gives me shivers. Especially the Ridley or Kraid area's.

Shadow of the beast on Amiga or Mega drive. So fucked up.

In fact a lot of Amiga game soundtracks are epic - Turrican, Gods, Moonstone. There are lots of graphic and sound demo's for Amiga too back in the day. Alcatraz was one that stood out.

It was released somewhat recently, and it has a sublime soundtrack to accompany with it.

YES!!! Rich Vreeland (disasterpiece) is a genius. also mentions BOC in an interview! FEZ the game and soundtrack are stunning.

also, PROTEUS..... anyone play that game? some don't call it a game, but the audio is incredible. very emotional music.

Did anyone play Hyper Light Drifter this year? Another excellent soundtrack by Disasterpeace, very similar to Fez. The game is also outstanding.

Nice! I'm going to check that game out too.

In my opinion, it is the best example of writing in a video game. It's a thoroughly atmospheric experience.

I also love the fifa 98 to 2004 soundtracks. Full of techno and rock, like Crystal Method, The Caesars, Grand Theft Audio, Underworld, Kasabian, Moby, Apollo 440, Gay Dad and many many more.
