I wasn't going to bite but I'm going to bite.
I don't hear anything other than other people's music slowed down with reverb and occasionally a filter and compressor applied.
It must be like your "modern art". I miss the point completely. I'm outwith the demographic, ok.

Joshua Rogers, the man behind Broken Machine Films, has been running a tape based label with several "vaporwave" style releases in the catalog.

As far as I'm concerned, if I try to be objective about vaporwave as a 'scene', I can't help but think it's mostly a waste of time.... That being said, the album that may have accidentally spawned all of vaporwave (i.e. may have been comically ripped off in the creation of vaporwave) is absolutely incredible, and perhaps one of my favorite albums of the new millennium.Techboy wrote:I wasn't going to bite but I'm going to bite.

Listen to Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1 sometime if you haven't already. Yes--for the most part that album is made up of crude plunderphonics/chopping and screwing of pop jams, but there's an unmistakable level of heart..... and perspective..... that Chuck Person aka Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never exorcises throughout the album. If the sonics or form of 'vaporwave' just isn't your thing you might not feel it that much on the first time, but this album is certainly a grower. That and as I've said before, I think there are some very deep philosophical/conceptual perspectives that Oneohtrix Point Never shares with Boards of Canada.
So yeah, that's my one big sell on all of vaporwave--an album that wasn't even intended to be 'vaporwave'. Mac Plus' Floral Shoppe can definitely be a fun listen for sure, but nowhere near as next level as what Chuck brought to the table.

My only experience with vaporwave is Floral Shoppe and I couldn't help but feel like the whole thing was a cheap trick

I think macintosh is honestly boring as fuck. Some vaporwave is definitely good to my ears but other stuff is just... repetitive and boring. I could care less whether someone slows vocal samples or a vinyl/vhs/commercial rip, that in itself is not self-sufficient like any medium. It's what you do with it.

I agree, as I said above I found Floral Shoppe just cheap. I believe she goes under the name Vektroid as well, and the stuff released under that name was more inventive.TaoTapeTao wrote:I think macintosh is honestly boring as fuck. Ah, I'll have to check it out. I do believe there is good 'vaporwave' out there, you just gotta look for it.Aerial Boundaries wrote:I agree, as I said above I found Floral Shoppe just cheap. Re: Vaporwave - A new you, a new tomorrow.
I've been listening to this genre of music for a couple of days now, and I have to admit that I dig it. It reminds me of the days when I was slowing down Gazebo records, it sounded so good. Vaporwave is the same experience multiply by 100! Loops stacked on loops of slowed down vocals and eighties basslines. I dig it, but I'll probably get tired of it in a month or so.
Re: Vaporwave - A new you, a new tomorrow.
A friend recently introduced me to Vaporwave, and like most other genres for me, I find it very hit and miss. I have fallen in love with a lot of Ramona Xavier / Vektroid's music though, but her catalogue definitely takes quite a bit of filtering through to find the really good stuff.
I can definitely see why people would hate the genre, and I would agree with the lot of the criticisms I've read, but there's some of it that I absolutely *love*.

claire pls
no but really, that's fair. Like most of these "buzz" genres, there's usually one or two glaring detractors, and as quickly as there are figureheads, there are people who are making the same music very lazily, just to get on the bandwagon quickly.

I guess I really disliked the idea of Vaporwave and a lot of the surrounding culture, if you would call it that. That said, I can't ignore my ears when they hear something that sedates them...
The original is almost identical and it turns out it was just the analogue keys that my mind was craving.

Love vaporwave. Love it. Love it.
Don't get the hate. Actually I get the hate. I just don't feel it. "This is stupid what's to enjoy about this" Fair enough man, it's not your thing. That doesn't mean we're pretending to enjoy something that isn't enjoyable. It really is actually cool - you just don't feel it. That's fine. Take off, hoser.
