Sorry, I contributed to some of that hostility.

So more on topic.....It WOULD be pretty cool if they did that. I agree. Honestly Id love to hear some outtakes of them just talking in the studio or some shit. A little peek behind the curtain :D

AN ENIGMA IN YOUR MIND

p.s

it's Aphex's style to do something like this and its awesome! I'm sure he's grinning... there's no way to absorb all that music in a week anyway. Also, it was THIRTEEN years in between Drukqs and Syro!

They aren't that much different in that way–

as much as they love the fans the fact is that the audience isn't why they make music... both R.D.J and Boards of Canada have made clear that if they were working non-music jobs they'd still be on the same mission.

Some of the opinions shared here were almost disturbing. I got a strong "I want BoC to make perfect music all the time and release it when I want it, if they don't do that I'll just accuse them of being pricks to their fans." vibe from it. Not cool.

What is happening. This forum is supposed to discuss and celebrate BoC's catalouge, not demand tracks they've said many times they don't want to release. Sure hope Mike and Marcus don't see this thread, it'd be damn shameful.

I think we can leave it open for now. While we can discuss this with strongly held views, even argue, I don't see things getting nasty or disrespectful yet.

I totally disagree, clearly, with the view held by some, but I'll defend their right to express it.

That's what a forum is after all, place to discuss and share, even develop ideas.

Peace be the journey, etc ;-)

I'd rather stay tense in the dark while they tickle me with treats and keep me thirsty.

That said...if they'd feed us snippets of old tunes through some trippy alternate reality game where you never catch the dragon...

I like you post Cupz, we are all like in the dark...possible thousand unreleased tracks and unforeseeable future in front of us...

This topic is a load of horseshit. We arent entitled to anything, they created it, they decide what happens with it. Saying they don't respect their fans is stupid as well. And saying they're afraid to release it, even if that is the case, so what? If you were a musician and you've made some top class albums, but don't really stand behind the tracks you've made in your teens, why the hell would you release it? Because some spoiled fanboys think they're entitled to it? Fuck them. I'd be really happy if they decide to release their old stuff. But they decide it. Not us.

That was me who brought that up. It wasn't a quote, just a vibe I was getting, like Nick47 said. Not necessarily just from this thread. It wasn't meant to be patronising or hostile, just an observation as part of the discussion.
Again, I don't really expect anything from BOC. For me, the idea of an artist releasing unfinished stuff, outtakes etc is a relatively recent thing that started off pre-internet as a cash-in for record companies (maybe I'm just cynical).
Now, with marketing via the internet and so on, it seems to be more the norm, maybe for better reasons, but still it's not something I expect, nor even want.
I can understand a more 'open' attitude is needed for artists starting out/self-releasing in order to stand out from the crowd, but even so I can't help feeling that something is lost. For Aphex Twin it's different, it's part of his thing to do what he wants and not really care, otherwise it seems just a bit, well, eager to please. Again, though, maybe someone younger used to consuming music in a different way might feel different.
Anyway, I'm repeating myself, so I'll leave it there.

I don't know what to make of the folks here who are hoping that their favorite band doesn't release their back catalog.

I have to admit I'm quite frustrated about their unwillingness to officially release their older material.

They requested that fans should not obtain copies of their leaked material. And I respectfully obliged. Apart from Kiteracer II which I accidentally heard when someone else played it from youtube, I've never heard the likes of Buckie High or any other tunes that seem to met with such massive approval.

The first time I hear these tracks, I want to hear them in their full glory and as the lads intended.

But after so many years, will this patience ever be rewarded? I've done as they asked. Any chance of a little reciprocation?

:)

Nope, I'm just happy for them to release it when they're ready and not necessarily every last thing they've recorded.

Mexicola wrote:Still not understanding your argument Naj? They should be happy for what they get?? How do you know what they can or cant afford? Even if your assumption is correct, why should they, or any other person give you something purely because you demand it?

My point- it's okay to WANT things. Especially after they haven't been released for 10 years since the 1st piece of info about them. Also, I think that they should at least go on their Twitter and say "lol sorry guys we don't feel like releasing the boxset". That would be 1000x better than just ignoring the topic altogether.

And my guess is that they can afford many things since they were able to spend 6 years travelling around the world, buying equipment and cataloguing their early stuff (!!!). And maybe all this aura of secrecy would be fine, but they went as far as to say that the glitch in one of the remastered Hi Scores songs is a legitimate part of the recording. It's not even a synth or an instrument, just a weird 0.5 sec sound which adds nothing to the song. Just admit your mistake, you guys!

MrMessiah wrote:TBH as much as I would love to spend a weekend going through whatever the BoC equivalent is, their tape archive or whatever, I'd far rather they held onto it till the right time. Unlike Aphex, who pretty much put this stuff out because it was "dead", never likely to surface in any other way and in his own words he'd "rather be working on new stuff", BoC are the kind of act where anything in that archive has a chance of being useful. Sample that turns up here? That's from over there. Unfinished track from their very early days? That's just become "New Seeds" (or whichever we agreed it was ;) )

Bro

BoC have spent A YEAR cataloguing all of their unreleased stuff. We've only heard Old Tunes and Boc Maxima so far. Talk about dead material...

And if they use their old songs on the new tracks, let's be honest here...that's just lazy. Maybe TH was just a scam? The album is from 20 years ago and they said "oh no, now we can only buy 9000000000000000001 pints of beer! We need more alive queens!" and released the album? I'm joking now, but it's possible!

2020k wrote:They designed an entire ARG, interacted with listeners and a fan community.
They released a new record, after much speculation.
They repressed all the old vinyl so we could all buy copies at a reasonable price.

They didn't interact with us personally, they said that most of that stuff was done by Warp
Ummm, yeah...
The first vinyl were ABSOLUTE SHIT if you remember

2020k wrote:That's a lot of creative work, as well as a ton of business work. We saw how long it took for them to get new pressings of Hi-Scores in our hands...

Skam's a bunch of dicks I guess lol

2020k wrote:Creativity doesn't run on a fan's schedule.

And then they go and make 100 songs for an album!

All I'm saying is, I want them to release some of their stuff once in a while because that would be cool and keep everyone interested, but that doesn't ruin the band's image in my eyes. The boxset stuff does, however

nick47 wrote:who is this aphex twin guy?

He's an autist who drives a tank

nick47 wrote:also, the BoCxset was ruined because all the old tracks being released online.

But...why does that matter? People were going apeshit over possible Old Tunes/Boc Maxima FLACs last year. People wanted the boxset and the feeling hasn't died down a bit.

nick47 wrote:and as stated above... we got the whole TH and the game leading up to it, and repressed vinyl (even though that was a major cock up) so we should be pretty goddamn happy for a while! Im sure an EP will be out there in the coming years, but dont expect anything and it will come as a happy surprise

Yeah the ARG stuff was cool, but it wasn't 100% their idea. Bands are expected to release albums, so I don't think that you guys should be praising them for that. And I am expecting an EP (maybe even an LP), I just don't know when it will come out lol
And even when the Hi Scores represses were being delayed by a year!!! all we got were some very rare updates from MDG (shoutout to him, he's great). Again, no "sorry" or "suck it your poor losers"

northernlite wrote:wow. my original post had lighthearted intentions. this is stupid guys, im not saying anyone owes us fans anything, i just think it would be beyond amazing if BoC decided to upload some old tracks on soundcloud... that's all. mods go ahead and close this if you want.

I'd release that stuff because...since some of the tracks are on the net anyway, maybe I'd release it so that the fans could listen to the tracks in good quality.

How did it even go after such a long time of negotiations? "You guys, everything is ready, the presses are warmed up, just tell us when to do it all and we will!" "Cancel everything". Thanks for the subtle insults by the way

ive heard the old tunes a bunch i just got rid of the files when i felt i didnt need them anymore and would rather forget about them and be surprised if older material was to ever be released

and if it isnt ever released thats fine too,

i like mystery in life, and the need to explain everything is a tendency that takes mystery away

as aphex has said music isnt some utility to be consumed and it therefore doesnt need to come with prepackaged expectations... there are four great BOC records to listen to right now!

It isn't an issue of entitlement or anything of the sort. For me, it's an issue of just being a bro and releasing a few really good songs. They don't owe anyone anything and they have the right to do whatever they want with their music. However, it would be a really cool thing to do for them to take about ten of the best old songs they have and throw us a bone by releasing them. They gave Chris Cunningham hours of music and told him to go nuts. They gave some dudes a remix for their student film. The material exists in an easily released form. It would just be a cool thing to do. Casual fans aren't going to buy it. Hipsters have probably already moved on and probably won't buy it. You know who would? Me. And you, the person reading this. That's it. No more and no less. But, as it stands, and by their own admission, we won't hear any of it until their children start mining the gold that is their parent's legacy.

I think I enjoy the mystery surrounding it and the thrill of the hunt more than I would ever enjoy the music itself. It's early material anyways, so it's not like we're missing out on any kind of finely crafted musical masterpieces.

I used to get excited over the idea of hearing rare/lost material like this until someone popped up with a legitimate copy of that GYBE tape and posted a few audio snippets. I was hyped as all hell watching the progress bar on the download of it, but that excitement faded quickly once I pressed play and realized what it was: uninteresting home recording wankery

It would be cool of them to do it, a total bro move, but that's not really their style, is it? The archival dump makes sense for RDJ, but BoC are essentially conceptual artists. The unreleased stuff we have now was just random shit made for friends, but everything since MHTRTC has been a concept album. I don't think they're after mystique as much as they're about presenting a unified, coherent statement, and putting together an archival release that does that would take a lot of work. It's believable that they've been working on that since 09, but have been distracted by making new music, and by life. I doubt that they'd just put out a bunch of songs and say, "hey, songs! they're awesome!" Which they would be, but BoC wouldn't be satisfied with that, imo,
