So you'd be perfectly happy if the Peel Session release just had the MHTRTC versions of Aquarius and Olson instead of what actually aired?

To be clear, I was talking about Happy Cycling when I said "replacing live audio with the studio version"

Oh, never mind then, there's only one version of that one :D

I was under the assumption that the Peel Session was live.. Although I could be wrong.
Bare in mind that happy cycling was only on the re-release of MHTRTC not the original.

I suppose they just weren't happy with bad day.. I wasn't much into that one myself

Peel Sessions were normally pre-recorded in the BBC studio a few weeks before transmission. The BoC session was unusual because they were in the studio recording it at the same time that the programme was on air, so they cut across to the studio and performed XYZ live (hence the interview). The other 3 tracks weren't performed live, just broadcast at a later date (along with the recording of XYZ). I remember because I was listening, in fact that was the first time I heard BoC.

Whatever the case may be.. Everything on the Peel Session is exclusive version wise to that release, besides happy cycling but that was released on peel session before mhtrtc

Have to quote myself from another thread, sorry. I was under the impression that I was posting here when I wrote it for some reason.
I have spoken to someone who has heard the source audio, as I said elsewhere, they claim it brings out subtleties and makes the track potentially on par with the MHTRTC version and that the radio rip basically transformed the track somewhat. Whether that is to be 100% reliable is another thing altogether, though, and they could have just been exaggerating the difference.
Other than that, are there any audible differences between the Peel Sessions Happy Cycling and the MHTRTC one? I know they are the same source, but in terms of production and polishing.

I've not noticed any difference myself but then again I haven't really tried to tell. I personally can't make a good judgement because I only have peel session on vinyl and the MHTRTC I have on vinyl doesn't contain happy cycling.
maybe someone could run it through a spectrogram and see

I'm really interesting what WARP and BOC themself are thinking releasing this music. The track is great. The official vinyl release also nice. But what they are really thinking? That after almost 7 years the album release, there's basically nothing new. I know, that their music takes time. But I would probably prefer to keep them silent, than releasing the old stuff. And I'm not bitching, just a thought!

I think WARP just wanted to release the Peel session box set and they thought it would be nice to resolve this sample clearance issue when there's a chance. Or perhaps they resolved it already some time ago. I don't think that BoC had really much to say in the matter (perhaps they refused to release the Bad Day version of Happy Cycling and that's it).

Oh cool thanks for clarifying. I heard it too!

The only thing I hear different in bad day that isn't present in the album/peel session release version is the introduction of the Pink Floyd - Heart Beat, Pig Meat sample ( other than that it's basically the same. I wouldn't mind seeing a release of bad day even if it is a lackluster version.

Just to clarify (as it is a confusing situation)

When I refer to "Peel Sessions Happy Cycling" I mean the version that appears on the LP, shared with MHTRTC. I will always refer to 'Bad Day' Happy Cycling as such, not forgetting the Bad Day. If anyone dares mention the Old Tunes Happy Cycling in this thread I will scream at them.

Ty for that though, Juggle. The sample doesn't appear to be in the standard version unless it is buried so deep into the mix that it isn't consciously audible, or disappears behind other percussive samples.

Anyway, I would still be interested to know if the MHTRTC version and the Peel Sessions (not Bad Day) version are entirely identical or whether there was some post production polishing etc for the bonus track.

Was "Bad day" an outtake and the version that we have on Peel and MHTRTC the final take perhaps? That would explain a lot. Another possibility is their being so displeased with Bad Day that they took their studio recording of it (that they likely had other plans for) and put it there in its place.

Sorry my typing isn't up to scratch, I moved home and all I have right now is a laptop that I have to lean over and hurt my neck to type on. "put it on your lap top, Valotonin - hence the name" - Microwaving my bollucks contradicts my desire to have children one day.

What's amazing to me as I listen to XYZ right now is that it sounds so fresh, like it could have been recorded this very year.

I would be inclined to say yes, but then again, I'm no authority so take what I say with a grain of salt.

^ Ty. I had always leaned more in the direction of that theory, also.

Might be unrelated and I am only a minute or so into the video myself, but this took my attention for obvious reasons:

Was there any other parts where John Peel interviewed them? other than the snippet from the old XYZ recording? on that note is there a full bootleg recording of the session anywhere? I've kinda wondered for years.

Personally, my favorite version of Happy Cycling is the one on Old Tunes

I've never been a big fan of XYZ, though. It sounds kind of empty to me. It just has the one chord with some guitar notes and a percussion part that sounds unfinished. BOC are good at melodies and beats, but their slow ambient works are often lackluster.
