It does feel like a goodbye in the sense. I think the hexagons within the greater hexagon is a visual indication that they may be saying they've "completed the Boards of Canada project." The one hexagon icon they use has transformed into 6, with the 7th in the center. I feel like it's a completely natural conclusion for them if whatever they release is their final output.

It feels like closure.

Eh the hexagon design is just kind of inevitable. One of their logos has been a cluster of hexagons in the past but reducing it to a minimal amount looks better from a graphic design perspective. Using just one would look wrong, cheesy even. Too generic.

What other options did they have? Putting a pic of a fucking orange on the VHS?

What? They literally could've chosen anything. That's art. I feel like it is strange to operate on the assumption that they were limited to only two choices, and that it had to be hexagonal. They've used one hexagon in their iconography multiple times, so how would that be cheesy?

The point of the logo was to signal it’s them without being too obvious. Maybe a new logo would’ve worked and that’s kind of what they did. They’ve used a singular hexagon logo with the ”BOC” text but without it… especially in white instead of a BoC signature color, seems too lazy. It’s basically implying a basic geometric shape is your personal logo. Narcissistic much?

Whoever uses a basic geometric shape and nothing else as their logo. Calling it narcissistic is a bit tongue in cheek

I think the whole thing is about generational loss, but not only through analogue means but more so in a poetic sense. We are doomed to repeat our past, changing ever so slightly as we do.

Yeah, that's right!

To me, this doesn't feel like a permanent goodbye, but rather just another step in the timeline of an artist who has a slow release schedule. It's just a temporary goodbye, as who knows how long it will be until the next release? I also agree with everyone else who has mentioned the significance of the hexagon motif--I would think for aesthetic purposes the ideal total LP number would be six for sides/angles of a hexagon or seven to fill out this shape that we see everywhere in their imagery:


And even if it is goodbye, for now we can be optimistic because we haven't really even said hello to Inferno yet!

As long as they have their health there is a chance for another release. Artists often change their minds about these things. Even a very occasional single would be beautiful. It'd also be cool if they released their rarer stuff as an album. Until the bomb drops there's hope for the future. But I do sometimes worry that I'll die before the next release and there will be an afterlife that only includes music I heard while alive.

Maybe I am huffing a lot of copium but after 13 years of on and off work, perhaps even these two perfectionists might have recorded more stuff that they deem worthy of a release, and we get another companion EP? Perhaps this Inferno will be a prologue to the band's traditional themes and they will rise like a phoenix and have a strong semi prolific autumn phase to their career?

Anyway, no matter what happens, if Tape 05 is anything to go by, there will a lot of richly layered music we will be digesting for years to come.
