If you use a higher sampling frequency or bit rate it sounds cleaner and clearer. So yes, it is aesthetics. The snare sound in LSD is almost certainly an 808 or 909 clap sampled with an Emax at 10khz. There is a different drum kit starting at 1:50 which a little cleaner sounding kit. It reminds me of the a Sequential, Oberheim, or Linn type kit.
