the future demise of BOC has been speculated here before.
but this thread is good in that it makes us think "is it just a new album or is it over and out".
they are supposedly going thro all the old material for a BOCset right?
maybe after that it will be curtains.

and as for warp ..?
piracy will probably kill them off..

Yeah but mdg just gives you info that you could guess or assume yourself. What makes him semi-legit is the fact he doesn't spread obnoxious false-hoods. But any information we get from the inside seems to be just as vague as our imaginations in respect to the future of the band.

BoC definitely dont seemed too focused on cash, their principle seems to be as authentic and genuine as their music except for the occasional Solange or Csi: Miami. A lot of people on this thread just sound like nutty consumers. That attitude like "they have all this music lying around why don't they release it?"; like their music is just some commodity or currency and the more you have the better. BoC seem to think more deeply and criticly about the music they release and don't just release shit because its there, a quality most artists lack these days. Dont forget, it gets repeated on this board alot "quality over quantity"

but they know we have some 100 or so old tunes in shitty quality already.

Based on the pathetic amount of knowledge I have about Boards of Canada, they do music as a mans to make a living, but they don't do it to make a shitload of money. If they were interested in that very much, why haven't they toured? And why haven't they released all that extra material they have in their cookie jar? Although, honestly, I can't imagine that BoC is very rich either, since they're living just off album sales and occasional use of their songs elsewhere.

no i think Warp will close their doors because record labels in this day and age are struggling. my opinion is not a reflection on what kind of artists they have on the roster, it's to do with the very real threat to the industry of digital distribution.

the whole business model of what we know as a "record label" is fixated around selling physical product. Bleep is probably the only saving grace they have with regards to the music side of Warp.

I think I heard that music has the right to children sold around 100000 units and Geogaddi sold something around 85000...MDG?

I bet they got atleast 33% of the sales. I think BOC could easily live of the money they make from album sales only...I bet they sell 3000 units a year combined from downloads from the back catalouge etc and I bet they have a new contract that gives them atleast 50% of album sales. I don't think they are big spenders and live a simple life so no problem for them making a living out of music.

BoC do just fine with album sales, adverts, etc.

As for Warp, I think their experiments in adaptation can be mis-read as a call for help. They're just trying things out and seeing what works. This doesn't necessarily mean they're in trouble, though I'm sure they're feeling a crunch like everyone else.

If there's any label that can weather the new music paradigm, my money's on them.
