Alot of people have been on this site for a long old time and get a bit tetchy about the old recurring will they/won't they topic cropping up again and again. You're not the first to get shot down in flames (in both senses) and you'll probably not be the last.
For what it's worth (ie. nothing at all) I think MDG was honest with his message last December where he said the album would drop this year. If that's slipped again, it's hardly the biggest surprise in the World. It doesn't make him a liar or a fraud, only guilty of giving the best info he had at the time.
Listen, we KNOW they are notoriously anal and picky. For all we know the album was all ready to go and then they scrapped it and started again. Equally, we also don't know a release date won't be announced tomorrow. Either way, as we've all said about 69 million times before, it'll be ready when it's ready. ie. when THEY think it's ready. No hints, no clues and no studio interview telling us all how they're getting on.
Rightly or wrongly, this is just how they roll and personally, I wouldn't want it any other way. If they change, that means compromise. And none of us should want that.
Patience.
I, for some reason, read this whole thread. And this is the only post that was worth reading. Well put dude.
Me, too.I support your posts, sexagon hun!

i also think they might have scrapped it and started again, maybe after the indifferent reaction towards SEVENFORTYSEVEN which was a direction they may have wanted to take BOC,i could be way off tho!?

If Sevenfortyseven was indeed their new sound, and they scrapped it, I'd be right upset! That song is ONE OF THE MOST INTENSE things I've ever heard! It's all speculation so it might not even be the case!

I absolutely disagree. It is of course speculation but if that was the case then I for one would be glad they decided to scrap it and start over. It isn't that is a bad song (well...maybe) but I would much rather here something (anything) else than more of that.

i thought Seven Forty Seven was from the Geogaddi era. but i agree with zeoevil, i think it would be a good direction to take their sound. it really is a fantastic song/sound.

The day they give a damn about what WE think of their music is the day I see the four horsemen galloping down my lane, their various weapons against humanity in hand and in use.

I think that already happened. It's called The Campfire Heaphase.
The most accessible release to date.

Agreed. I liked 747. It's more of a fuller sound and perhaps less personal than older tracks, but I think it's be an interesting area for BoC to head in. Someone here mentioned before that 747 sounded like a psychedlic band jamming. I know they've talked up this notion a bit in interviews of a psychedelic band sound from a parallell universe, achieved only through bizzare and labourios studio techniques. I personally feel that they'd benefit from working on an idea like this.
Although I think perhaps they fell flat with this with something like Davyan Cowboy. That was a real dissapointment for me. However they have hinted at it in other tracks which have been more successful. Something that did interested me was Squarepushers more recent interviews where he talked up the idea of a virtual band from space, using wizardry to achieve some sound that challenges notions of what a live band could sound like. This all sounded fantastic but unfortunatley those recent records of his dissapointed. Of course there is the risk that something like that could end up sounded like the most horrible prog or those Amorphous Androgynous records. Squarepushers is a vastly different sound alright, but that's an idea I'd love to see BoC explore as a shift in style.
Even though the early electronic BoC sound is the one I fell in love with and will always go back to most, I do feel like they've mastered this and really nobody can better it. These days there does appears to be a plethora of Biters who seem to want to employ the same ideas but in my opinion get it all wrong. Hipster blogs and folks at sites like pitchfork seem to talk up the whole degraded and washed out melodic synths and all this hauntology / chillwave / glo fi guff as if all this was new, but really is it any different from the ideas that BoC were exploring to greater effect back in the 90's? Anyway, BoC always existed outside scenes but It'd be great if they came back with some crazy new sound that blew all these cats out of the water.
I'd be perfectly happy if they brought out anything to be honest. Even if it did retread old ground. I wouldn't object to an electronic record, a shoegaze record, a space disco record. I can't quite picture a Dubstep record though..hehe. I think that as talented artists they could turn their hand to any style of music and the results would be great or if not at very least interesting.
Personally I think that if they would have scrapped a record, that this would not have anything to do with concerns about their fanbases acceptance of a new direction or of passing trends in music. I don't think BoC would let these things get in the way of the creative process. I do think as many have pointed out, that it is a case of meticulous perfectionism. Perhaps with the record that was reportedly nearing completion all that time ago, Warp did sit with the record for too long deliberating its marketability or release date (as they allegedly did with the Plaid record), BoC got bored with that sound, called halt on it and set to task with a brand new one. Perhaps all this talk of two records coming out is infact the long overdue, scrapped record which has been updated and tweaked slightly along with a more recent record to be released seperately? Perhaps one will be their trademark sound record keeping old fans happy and the other a complete departure..unrecognisable as BoC? Who knows? All speculation yep, but all exciting and hopefully soon.

Ditto, Fearless Flounder. I think the "sound" of BOC that others emulate entirely misses the point of what BOC is about. The aesthetics are there, but the arrangement and narrative are lightyears apart.
Also, when Squarepusher started talking about a new live act, my ears perked up (I have the ears of a dog). It got me thinking of where a band like BOC might go.

747 originates from sample used here: so its ( should be ) something old and something new. Who knows how old it really is?
I'm happy with the amount of BoC stuff there already is, but new album would be great of course. An official collection of old stuff would be mindblowing too. Peace and have a nice evening.

Totally. It's frustrating as a music lover when you hear the Biters come out. It's like 'stop getting BoC wrong'. I suppose most gotta start somewhere though before fiding their own voice. Hehe... Maybe they should address the issue on the next album like Ghostface did on Raekwons Cuban Linx record with that 'Shark Biters' track. You know, like verbal warnings

On the whole boc imitation front, I have to say I have never really come across any because I generally try to avoid such stuff. Same with most music I like; there's the musicians who pay homage to predecessors (e.g. Captain Beefheart - Howlin' Wolf), but the rip-offs are obviously just a breed of shitmunchers.
As for doubts about a new album this year, I have to say I'm on that same page too... I think someone a while ago said all their other releases came out on Mondays, and there are only 12 Mondays left now... either way I'm not fussed; they've got the Warp contract and given MDG's credibility (I won't argue against the boardsofcanada.com e-mail addy) I take it for granted that there will be something on the horizon. I just hope more than anything that those guys are enjoying making music and raising their kid(s)

I think you might have missed my point. I don't like 747 that much and would be very unhappy if that was the way they decided to take their music.

Being a hardcore fan of Boards of Canada is an exercise is perpetual disappointment (until, of course, new music is released... then it's pure elation).
I can't believe this thread has made it this long! At least it gives this subforum something to talk about.

Happy tententen everyone.
I guess there's still some time left, but I think if Adriana Lima flew in on an elephant and gave me a rainbow beej, and I was crowned King of Austria-Hungary, today would be a huge disappointment.
