With regard to the website, is there anyone that can code for it? The one thing I haven't got my head around.
There are quite a few people on this board that can do web programming/scripting.
I seem to remember guido was a web programmer. perhaps give him a pm.

Ahem.
EDIT: actually, scratch that. I really have a ton of other coding work to do for work, and I honestly wouldn't even have time to put into it really. I might be able to host something on my servers though if you needed.
I would love to participate in the relay, if I have time.

I've added you to the end, as I said I would. If when your turn comes around you're not available, we'll work something out.

What we're doing is making a track each. Based on samples of the track before yours, which are given to you by the person before. Once you're done with your track, you take the dry or processed samples you used, or the melodies/phrases you recorded, and pass that on to the next person in the chain.
The idea is that each piece of music is linked to the one before it. The key to it is that you need to respond to the ideas in the previous one. Then you can either be constructive; building upon what they did - or destructive; mangling the samples so they sound nothing like the originals. It's entirely up to you as long as it fits in with "lo-fi, low-key, and warmth". Based on that you could do anything from folk music to Eno/SotL style ambient.
I hope I explained it clearly enough. I'd love to have you on board Tom, your BoC covers on youtube are awesome.

Ooh okay that does make sense now, thanks. You can add me to the list and I'll give it a shot, never done anything like this before so yeah I'm totally up for it.

Absolutely!
I figure 20 participants is enough for this first 'round' if you will.

so, just kinda wait for the person before me to submit their stuff, then i kinda.. continue with it?
in the "Call and response" style (theirs being the "call")..
or am i understanding this wrongly?

Yes. You can add to it, or you can completely destroy it. You can play the melody with a different instrument. You can make the melody have the same rhythm as the drums. You can do whatever you like, it's just based on the samples of the track before.
The emphasis is on experimentation with samples, but you can add your own stuff for sure. And go wild. Do something you're not used to, even.

seems like a great way to generate new ideas and all that. the fact that everybody will only ever hear the track before theirs until the very end is cool. itll be like chinese whispers

Yes I didnt want to say this, but I realy hope we play it like this.
Can we just pm our samples and track to the next person in the list.
that way nobody will have heard the project in full up until the very end

Maybe I was affording myself the luxury of hearing it in turn for the work on the website design and artwork? Hm?

hmm.. well, what i was thinking of doing was maybe taking a recurring melody in the track before mine and just letting it fade out as I (either on trombone, trumpet, or keyboard) start to fade in..
so i guess all i would need is a sample of the melody!
now, who's before me..

Maybe you could bend the notes in the track before up and down to yours. Say if the melody went C-A-F#-D#, you could move notes one at a time on every 8th note or whichever, to eventually get to D-A-F-G# or something, which would have the same effect as a fade-in except nicer, imho. Plus that would create some really interesting harmonics/dissonances with your acoustic instruments.
This brings up a good point. Feel free to work with the person before you!

oh, and i haven't talked to techboy to see what kind of thing he's doing yet (although he probably doesn't fully know, seeing as he doesn't really know what the guy before HIM is doing next.. etc. etc.), but i'd kinda like to be put next to someone who will kinda concentrate on more melodic things than drums, seeing as i'm working with mostly acoustic instruments like brass, keyboard, and maybe even a little glockenspiel/guitar..

Well, judging by Techboy's entry to OOT 4 as underwater - the song is called 'The Big Mill', and his other stuff - I don't think you have any problems with melodics. Remember you could always take a rhythmic figure and make it melodic in response.
