We shouldn't immediately assume that a track we can't identify straight away is unreleased BoC. There is so much pre-internet music out there that there is no trace of online, at least without knowing the artist/title.
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
The compilations people are making of tracks that are supposedly BoC's own creation from this mix, whilst I know they are of good intention, are inaccurate.Omikron wrote:We shouldn't immediately assume that a track we can't identify straight away is unreleased BoC. Perhaps there really is an authentic unreleased segment of one of their tracks in there, but one shouldn't state that it is just on the basis of not being able to find it elsewhere on the internet.

I just realised I basically repeated your sentiments entirely.
I think "I thoroughly agree" would have worked just as well, but yes.

Its playful humor, nothing else.
The fact that MDG is so illusive on the site these days means that people have a bit of fun describing it in terms of a summoning or a rare sasquatch sighting.
just thought it might make him semi reluctant.. He might think twice about giving us info right after a summoning, because then we might be disappointed next time we summon him and he doesn't appear

Seconded.. As I said before, the last thing we want is another bunch of mislabelled tracks floating around.. Best to err on the side of caution
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
The entire concept of an MDG summoning is a joke really.
He posts whenever he feels that there is information that needs elaboration.
I really don't think anyone takes it seriously and it is just a bit of fun. I also don't think that he would be reluctant to post after a 'summoning' if there was some information he would wish to clarify anyway.
It is a bit of a running joke and it bears absolutely no hindrance or encouragement on him to post when he feels that there is a reason to.

Well I hope he clears this one up soon.. Fellow boccers have put a fair bit of research into this one, think it's only fair to know if they have got it right or part right.. Or completely wrongValotonin wrote:The entire concept of an MDG summoning is a joke really.

It was a good call on your part, really. I think this is an instance that would benefit from his interjection to prevent people from mislabeling tracks or miscrediting* the work of other artists to BoC.

Hello guys. I didn't see a discussion about the numerology behind the release date of Societas x Tape ( and if it was started one i'm really sorry). I've just read here https://bocpages.org/wiki/Societas_x_Tape that: "The time elapsed between the release date of Tomorrow's Harvest and the premiere of the Societas x Tape is exactly 6 years and 12 days. 6, 12=6+6, 666." What are your thoughts about this?

The "Thank you for not smoking" sample happens directly at 36 minutes in, the devil's number. Spookey!

It's cool but I wish it pointed to something. But much like 822 on Tomorrow's Harvest or 70 tweets, it probably won't amount to anything. Would love to be proved wrong though.Linkage wrote:Hello guys. I didn't see a discussion about the numerology behind the release date of Societas x Tape ( and if it was started one i'm really sorry). Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
I most certainly didn’t state that everything in my mix is definitely BoC, I said it was a mix of confirmed (the Illusion/Slave to the Rhythm remix, the manipulated ads, the segment containing the reversed Elegants song, etc) AND “suspected” original tracks. And before anyone mentions it, I don’t buy for a second that the Illusion remix was by someone else. That makes no sense at all.Valotonin wrote:The compilations people are making of tracks that are supposedly BoC's own creation from this mix, whilst I know they are of good intention, are inaccurate.Omikron wrote:We shouldn't immediately assume that a track we can't identify straight away is unreleased BoC. As to the likelihood of the other tracks included in my mix being originals? As I said, they’re suspected, not 100% known- but having been a musician for many years, and having listened to the music of BoC more than any other artist (by a wide margin), I know what does and doesn’t sound like them. Every single one of those songs sounds like it could have been lifted from R35TT. Plus there’s a good case to be made for the last track showing up in the fade out of XYZ.
How did people know R35TT was legit before it was referenced by MDG? How is authorship accorded to artists in cases of uncertain provenance? Sometimes an approximation is the best you can do, and I’m willing to bet that at least 3 of those tracks are BoC.
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
Hey, SamuraiDrifter. Its okay.
I am not including you in that list and didn't have that on my mind at all at the time of posting.
You have said that they are unconfirmed and have just now stated that it is suspected tracks as opposed to confirmed. You aren't one of the people flaunting these tracks as most certainly Boards of Canada and you operate on the grounds of possibility.
This is inherently a positive thing and I wouldn't for a second say otherwise. I am sorry that I wrote it in such a way as to be open ended enough that you thought that it was a veiled personal disapproval, it really wasn't.
I also agree. The Grace Jones/Illusion mix was almost certainly BoC and I personally disagree with people who claim that it could be a mix that exists elsewhere that they decided to include.

Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
Just a few things I noticed while listening to the supposed BOC tracks. The shoegaze snippet has an uncanny quality about it. It almost sounds like shoegaze style guitars imitating a BOC synth. It has that same slightly mourning, reflective-of-the-past feel to it. That one definitely raised my suspicion.
The ambient drone at 57 definitely raises my suspicion too because it feels like something you'd hear on the R35TT. It has a more primal, nostalgic beauty to it.
The conclusion I've drawn is (if these two tracks are indeed BOC tracks) that they're letting us know the BOC set is on the horizon. These tracks didn't feel like new BOC compositions at all. Like the whole playlist, they delved into the past and could be snippets from the music they're curating for an archival set. I might even take the leap and say that the shoegaze snippet is from Play By Numbers if it's a BOC track.

I had considered the sameEchelon wrote:I might even take the leap and say that the shoegaze snippet is from Play By Numbers if it's a BOC track.
The other ambient track you mentioned is one I am somewhat less clear on, but the guitar interlude is either sampled sections of an MBV track or someone really trying to experiment with and replicate what they hear on MBV records. They have stated that one of their favorite records is Loveless, MBV is actually how I got into Boards of Canada so that is nice to know, and that is clearly present on the Play by Numbers vignette we have heard elsewhere.
One thing I will say, if that is indeed sourced from an early release then it almost proves the fact that a Bocset is on its way. Listening to the difference in audio quality between that and the interlude on Societas X would mean that it has been cleaned up and polished. Not something they would do just to include it in a mixtape where the tracks vary heavily in quality from a fidelity and noise floor point of view etc.
This is all speculation, though. It could be a bedroom guitarist friend of theirs who sent them a tape of them doing some experiments with the vibrato unit.
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
I sadly lack more than the basic knowledge of shoegaze music. I bought Loveless recently (actually inspired by BOC's liking of it) but haven't given it a fully devoted listen. This shoegaze track has inspired me to explore it tomorrow so I can properly gauge if this snippet is fully in line with MBV's music, or it is something more suspicious. I'm just playing it by my Board's trained ear and I definitely think it is something more than a mere shoegaze guitar riff.Valotonin wrote:I had considered the sameEchelon wrote:I might even take the leap and say that the shoegaze snippet is from Play By Numbers if it's a BOC track.![]()

But I definitely understand the possibility it could be anything. After all, there were many times on Societas X tape where I had to pause and say "Is it them?" before some element or chord progression popped up that they wouldn't normally use.

Oh, they are. You are in for something special. Only with BoC and MBV do I consistently think about what it would be like to go back and listen to them all over again without any concept of how they sound.
Re: Post-WXAXRXP Societas X Tape Tracklist & Discussion
I just love this boards of Canada mix. I think they are really just trying to make you laugh. Woah, xaugh heh
Whoda known. I think they have a great sense of humor if all's knownest.
Maybe they'll call the next album "Monday's Maybe's". And release somethin for "Christ"'s sake. G'day.
My name is robin leech and oi doan't no why. We remixed tham. Thay kanx bi.
