Suddenly I'm not so excited about Chumbawamba. They've been a guilty pleasure for me for quite a while; i like them to an extent.
But on their most recent record they have a song called Add Me that's supposed to be "about the creeps that clutter up cyberspace" and it strikes me as less playful and satirical and more cold and brutal, the lyrical equivalent of looking at various common characters one encounters on the internet and sneering in revulsion. It seems like the kind of song you might expect a musically inclined preppy boy to write. They take a pot shot at furries while they're at it, which much as I hate to admit, hurt a little.
What happened to the Chumbawamba of "Outsider", the sympathetic anthem of outsiders and strangers? What happened to the chorus of, "I'm not alone/you're not alone"? Maybe there are some creeps on the internet, but we're not all the same, and we need companionship and community as much as your average anarcho-punk on the street does - the internet is a great resource for those of us who just aren't comfortable letting everyone in real life know about some of our weirder interests. Wish they'd see this instead of just viewing internet denizens as socially disfigured shut-ins and twisted haters.

dude i've been on a submarine that shit is crazy fun
i totally forgot i have been on a submarine. i have been on a number of them actually
but just now i remembered listening to the eco quest soundtrack
it's too bad i'm a lazy spoiled bum or i could work my way to being a submarine captain or something sweet like that. but i do not have the motivation anywhere in me. i'm waaaay more motivated to sit on my white ass and play videogames. welcome to the future of humanity, o god, haha. on the plus side, there's awesome music in the future, so i guess it's not all bad.
edit: and said music is mostly free - legality aside, in the real, natural sense of 'free' - if you even slightly know your way around the internet.

ahhhh, dudes, i just went down with like -all- my friends on campus to heath creek, which is this creek that flows through a forest on the other side of the highway from my college campus, and you have to hike in there for a solid like 20 minutes on this wild ass path.
pretty soon there was like 20 or 30 kids all hanging out enjoying awesome music from an ipod speaker thing that phased in and out like the modern equivalent of a fuzzy record. and yeah, we made a bonfire and listened to campfire headphase, i demanded it. everyone loved it though. we smoked and toked and drank roughly $100 worth of liquor and wine (both bottled and boxed) that was financed entirely by the student radio station's budget (it was their party, i was just there cause i'm friends with all of them, although later a bunch of non-radio kids showed up).
and i played harmonica to the bongos.
it was awesome, but it turned dark for me and some others later. we got freaked out and wanted to leave pretty bad.
a good friend of mine died today, i had only met her this year. she hung out with me all january-term and we got high one time, had dinner a bunch and shared a keyboard in our music theory class. she was a really special part of my life for a while, and the times we had were good.
i'm still kind of reeling from it right now, it's part of what made me want to take off later on. but it was good to be with friends and have a good time for a while.
