BOC Live 2013?

I remember reading once that them as BoC was just part of a much larger plan they had. Yeah, sure it's an EP/Mini Album, i don't know. Never repeated what the guy said to me until now as i don't really think it's true. I guess people might have this end vibe because TH has this desolate, post-apocalyptic and wasteland feel about it.

If they leave Warp i can only hope it's with the BOCset of old and unreleased material.

The band specifically mentioned getting a touring act together during the press rounds for The Campfire Headphase. Perhaps those plans have come to fruition with this album...? From what I've heard so far it seems suited for playing live.

I might be getting a bit confused but why the percussion? Surely it would be drum machines.

Of course it's drum machines but my point is they are running samples. They're not really interfering with them or changing up the beats as they go along very much. Listening to the live version of 1969 it's difficult for me to even discern some things that don't sound pre-recorded. Unfortunately I think that's a lot of their live aspect.

And if Orbital feels comfortable just "pressing play" that's them, but I don't think BoC is the same.

Fair enough, I'm going to bow out of this discussion now because I don't think anyone, even yourself, can tell me that you know how Boards writes their music, nor how they perform it. That's what I was getting at. But I also think I misread your original point and thought you were suggesting that all they do to write their tunes is use a load of samples (i.e. of other people's work, which is usually what sampling entails)

To be fair, I think the fact that they are sample-centric is pretty obvious. What with their name, Boards of Canada, being based on one of their main inspirations, and likely a large sample source for them.

As far as the drums go, that's been their style from the beginning, and one of the reasons I fell in love with them all those years ago. The steady, nearly unchanging beats I heard hypnotized me into loving them.

I know some people don't view BOC as a "live" group. They may even feel the same about themselves. But I believe they could put on the dopest, mindblowing live experience if they wanted to. It would have to be done in the right setting, and it MUST have visuals to go with the show.

They really need to tour, at least once. For this cult-like, passionate following that they've amassed. For the BOC heads, do it for the fans!

I could see someone on an electric drum kit playing the beats on a few TCH songs which IIRC were written in that manner.

Oh no, I just mean pre-recorded sounds by "samples". I'm sure they create the vast majority of them.

Just my two cents:

From what we've heard, it seems like TH is going to be BOC's most analog album to date. It sounds like the stuff they have been working on is largely written on synth-based instruments that would be more easily playable in a live setting or at least somehow programmable, unlike say The Campfire Headphase where the guitars would have been impossible to recreate or Geogaddi which was largely collage-based. With that in mind I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to imagine they would preform at least one or two shows.

That said, I'm sure they would be very particular in terms of setting up what exactly their live experience would be like. The projections (if any) and overall environment would have to compliment and not take away from the music, something that is very hard to do with a sound that is already so distinctly visual. These are two guys who put a great deal of care into their work, after all. With the huge amount of promotion that has been done for this album, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it was really all build-up for a performance of some sort - there have been enough unexpected twists and turns along the way of the whole ARG thing to make me believe that nothing is impossible at this point.

I think the point I was trying to make quite badly was essentually BOC and Orbital both do the same sort of thing live (push buttons on time, twist knobs etc) While some might not consider it spectacular orbital prove it can be (I've seen them live 14 times last time was about 2 years ago and they were still great)

Stars of the lid might not be considered to be very exciting live given the ambient nature of their music but still pull it off. Stuff like Air or Portishead again couldn't be considered lively but again both are amazing live.

I enjoyed BOC loads when I saw them, I'm sure now it would be more spectacular and 3 more lps of material to play.

I was at the Lighthouse Party, do you remember there were a few pillheads nodding to the firebell cos they thought it was a new track?

I have seen so many live shows since my first rock concerts in the mid-70s. Some bands that I loved on record were not so great live and vice versa.
Many electronic acts are just "pressing play" as was mentioned with Orbital and that can make one feel like you are just watching someone check their email on stage, so they spice up the stage presence with visuals, dancers, etc.
I always felt that if my music ever took me to a place where there were enough people who actually wanted to see me perform it live and I could afford it, I would want to make the songs take on a very different life live by adding a few other musicians to play some of the keyboard/synth parts as electric bass, percussion, guitar etc and I would play different instruments on different songs as well.

I would still go see them, even if they hid behind a stack of prop gear burning a splif while a tape played.
