I was really lucky to find Boards of Canada because I was never a huge fan of Warp records and I didn't really listen to any electronic music. It was summer three years ago I think when I saw the words "Boards of Canada" on the credits to a cartoon on the internet, I don't even remember what it was about. but I thought "Boards of Canada? Is that actually a band? whata weird name..." and I looked them up and managed to find a place I could listen to some songs from MHTRTC but I was only slightly intrigued, and after listening to a few tracks I sort of forgot the whole thing.

Then half a year later when I was playing guitar I sort of stumbled upon the chord progression from Pete Standing Alone, one of the tracks I had heard. It took me a good while to remember where I had heard those chords, and once I did I had them stuck in my head all day. I looked BoC up on Amazon.com to see what cds they had out at the time and the next day I headed down to my local underground record source and picked up Geogaddi. It was the weirdest thing I had ever heard and at the time I listened to lots of rock and punk and such that only ever stuck with me a year or so. but when I heard Geogaddi I realized I had found something awesome that I would not forget about in a few years, and so far I haven't.

I first heard of them in I think 97 from the orblist. I thought it was a cool band name but wasn't intrested in any new music at the time. Really wanted to focus on dubby reggae, thick bassy stuff (Bill Laswell). So several years pass. -All the while orblisters are singing praises about BOC-

Then my friend Gel-Sol played Everything.... Balloon track on one of his mixes, and I realized what I was missing out on.

Kinda funny though, if I were smart I would have tried out some of their stuff earlier and fallen in love with them much earlier. Instead it was like "A new band... I don't like popular new bands... waaaaaaaaaa!!!"

Yea, so they pretty much pump my nads.

All right, all right. Come on. If you really heard Play By Numbers, you have to give us details, please . Also, how was the music at that show? Was it all released stuff, or even more unreleased stuff? How did it sound? Sorry, ha, just interested.

To be honest i dont remember much of play by numbers, it was played with lots of other good tunes on a long night session, i do remember the cover being cool as feck with the babys face one it, and amazing cross processed colours on the photo. My mate informed me they were from Balerno (about 3 miles away from me in edinburgh). i was pretty impressed. a lot of the music played on that night was pretty similar, and it was quite a late night smokey edinburgh night!

As for the gig in the venue, i couldnt tell you what tunes they played. i went to see autechre and was blown away by BoC, i was still quite new to them. I knew one of the guys in Thinktank who also played, he told me thay had just been signed to skam and were soon to release something. The Boards tunes were mystical and along with the tv screen visuals quite an experience.

Was anyone else on this forum at the gig?

When I was watching Salad Fingers, I thought the music was pretty interesting, found out the music was BoC, went to the Warp website and heard a few samples which I liked, it went from there.

That's where I found out about Autechre, Aphex and Squarepusher, too.

my ex boyfriend introduced them to me, well thier music not THEM!! he had some random blue vinyl in his collection and I played it once while rather drunk or something like that. I tried to nick it when we split up but he was having none of it!!

I had a realization yesterday..

When we started up our company, we kept working hexagons into our logo and webpage (www.nervesoftware.com, yeah, hasn't been updated in a looong time) We settled on a blue-ish background theme. Though one of the early tests that I really liked was a darker reddish/orange w/hexagons (inverse would be blue?)

About six months later was when I first heard BoC. The first track I remember hearing and becoming obsessed with was "Turquoise Hexagon Sun".

It all fits!

I discovered Aphex and BoC at about the same time.

I was a big ninja kid back then.. I listened to Food and Amon Tobin and a lot of those guys.

FOr some reason my listen of "Aquarius" always struck me as a novelty thing (until later). It was my download of "Pete Standing Alone" and, later, "Everything You Do is a Balloon" that completely sold me. Been buying their tunes ever since.

i was listening to a downtempo radio tv station that i have. "The Beach at Redpoint" by a band name "Boards of Canada" came on. I went on Amazon and Geogaddi became the soundtrack of my summer.

through musicmatch jukebox. i hated it at first.

whilst shopping thru a local record store a friend told me of a crazy electronic band that he wouldnt tell me the name of due to his fear of "making it mainstream"...later that nite he had sent the song twoism to me and... well you know the rest

As for fear of making it mainstream I did once leave an mp3 player in a class at school... but the only person to notice it said "I had a look at it, but your taste in music is totally rubbish."

I got into them on my own thru my sister's boyfriend, who knew I was a big Autechre fan and thought I'd like them.
