I just try to be really conscious about what I eat and how it's prepared. If I could hunt and gather all of my food I would let game mostly run free, I'd fish a lot and would perhaps scavenge what predators have just killed on their own terms (but leave them plenty). You can't avoid every cruelty because something else is going to have sharp teeth sadly. Of course I have a lot of empathy for things and any act of killing is not easy (thankfully for me that is mostly witted down to fish but it's still sad to me).

As for confining my diet to vegetarian things, and farmed cheese that is done old school and humanely, that's not hard to do. I frequently don't have meat around the house and improvising is not a problem.

I've been on a vegetarian diet for the past five years, although I still eat like shit because I largely have no drive to cook or go to a nice restaurant by myself. I haven't had much issue when it comes to food availability when I go out since any place worth eating at usually has some kind of vegetarian option. I never really have the urge to eat meat anyway. The thing that has bugged me ever since I started, and still happens to this day, is people treating it like it's some kind of alien religion that I have to explain every time I meet up with certain people.

Actual Q/A's I've had with people:
"So, you're still on the vegan diet?"
No, I'm a vegetarian.
"What can you eat?"
Food.
"Do you eat?"
No, I photosynthesize.
"Can you eat potatoes?"
No, they have too much meat in them.
"What do you miss most now that you're vegetarian?"
Not being asked about it all the time!

Honestly, I think it'd be simpler coming out as transgender at this point  . That being said, I'm still not preachy about it to people, I just hate the questions.

Why do the questions bother you so much? Just answer them honestly or tell them your main reason for having this diet. I eat a vegetarian diet for about 6 years now, never looked back. And I really loved (I would still eat it if it were for taste alone, it tastes awesome!) my meat, eating daily. But I don't miss it because down the line it's just taste, a very brief sensory perception that is gone before you know it. Quite the luxury.

Sometimes there were people who were curious about it in a condescending way, but I don't really mind. It's just a lifestyle choice. Most of those people are pretty ignorant anyway so I just let it slide and stay polite. My main reason is to reduce animal suffering and I gladly contribute to that. But as everything in life this could be seen in a very hypocritical black and white way, because I still use dairy products (albeit a lot less than before) which are certainly not free from contributing to animal suffering either.

But let's use this example, say you want to quit smoking and you currently smoke a pack of cigs a day, is it hypocritical to start smoking half a pack? Because why smoke at all then, you want to quit right? See, I don't think the world is black and white.

Because I've answered them all many times, and to the same people.

Fair enough, valid point especially if it's to the same people.

I'm spiritual and totally believe that not eating meat is just better on all levels,
aesthetically, physically, aetherically as well, but I just don't see myself quitting meat,
its obv delicious, yet I feel guilty, we all do that or a good portion does when you see whatever meat you eat today appears as a baby calf, pig on your Twitter, Facebook feed, some kind would feeding milk. but man, I think as humans it's in our nature to devour nervous systems, that's not an excuse it's just built into us, we need to survive and I argue as a meat eater we are in an age now where we can live a life with all the data out there on how to survive not eating any animal, but fuck it. Bacon smells great, beef with gravy boosts my serotonin levels, I'm just gonna dwell in the hell worlds that link to eating gaia's animals and find another way to transcend maaaan.

I was a strict vegetarian for like 8 years. These days I'm 95% vegetarian. I occasionally will get shrimp or fish at a restaurant and will eat other forms of meat if it's being given away for free or is going to be wasted otherwise.

In general I've kind of cut dogmatic thinking out of pretty much every area of my life. People tend to be stuck thinking in black and white terms, like "either you're vegetarian or eat meat all the time." If everyone just thought "y'know I could just eat meat less often rather than try and fail at going totally without it" there wouldn't be so much pressure and a lot of animals & resources would be saved.

Like, I think of it on a scale. No meat would be best, but less is still better than saying "fuck it I guess I'm doing nothing" and rationalizing constant consumption to myself.

So yeah. 95% vegetarian.
