Question for this thread: Recently I've been making very complicated and fast tracks, especially in the preccussion section. Should I try out Renoise to make composing this stuff easier?

Not if what you are using is working fine for you. Trackers are a really different way of working and have their advantages but is still something new to learn. But try a demo and see if you click with it.

I would actually think if midi slop is an issue, not that you've said it is, but in precise timing between hardware and software innerclock sync-gen II may be more what you'd need.

Hey how do you like the Cheetah MS6. It's always seemed like a quirky cool little synth but they seem harder to get in the US. Nice call on the cs60.. the price on these things are disgusting really. We were lucky an got an amazing deal on a cs80 2 years back.

The MS6 is a nice sounding synth, if a bit of a bugger to programme! I bought mine quite cheap, brand new, and it was one of those originally destined for the US, if the mains wire colour coding is anything to go by. Sorry about that!
I bought the CS60 back in '93 for £149, sight unseen. I think the shop was just glad to get rid of it! No one was interested in them back then, but I loved that it didn't really sound like anything else.
It's damn heavy, but I guess it pales next to the '80!

The 80 is a great synth but its messed up. It is so bloody heavy and detunes so bad if you look at it too long. hahaha. but its got a sweet tone no doubt. I'm kind of a nutter for the jupiter 8 and obxa though to tell you the truth. But even those are stupid money today. It's just that sound of DM's Get the Balance Right, Simple Minds New Gold Dream is so lovely.

Juno's...you want them? There yours. You just gotta pay shipping. 106, voice chip 1 needs replacement. Alpha needs r output fixed. Both are well used.

I use an SP-404sx, a Microsampler, Bassstaion II, and a guitar and record into Reaper. This has served me well for years, but I am now thinking of taking the dive into something like Ableton Live (with that sweet looking Push controller).

What are people's thoughts on Ableton? Do you think it would take a really long time for someone like me, coming from a very 4-track-overdubby way of doing things, to get the hang of it. And, more importantly, would it be worth all the money? Should I then sell my beloved SP-404sx?

Ableton isn't terrible to transition to from the 4 track style, it actually works identically if you ignore the looping/sequencing/MIDI arrangements aspects and just record to audio tracks. But I'd say hang on to the hardware also, you can use Ableton to sequence and control all of that and keep the unique sounds/quirks/effects of the hardware which can likely do a lot of cool things that Ableton can't. Also each piece of hardware filters it's sound differently so this offers a lot of options for creative processing and effects use, especially when combined with Ableton's sounds. Really good for dirtying up a sound or abusing a particular funky reverb. Hardware+Ableton is used to great effect by Com Truise, Panda Bear, Bradford Cox/Deerhunter, and The Black Dog so definitely a legit way to go. I haven't used the Push controller yet but it looks pretty awesome and very useful for live performance.

Thanks cubistking1906. I downloaded the Ableton Live trial about half an hour ago, and am so far having a blast. I have already learned how to multi-track record (so, basically everything I was able to do in Reaper), and the session view looks like it will be insanely fun once I get the hang of it.

I will definitely need to sell some gear to warrant buying Ableton + Push, so I'm taking my time deciding. Might hold on to the SP though...

haaaaa, checked out this thread and saw a post from 3 years ago, turns out my setup pretty much hasn't changed a bit!
Except for some fx pedals and a less shitty laptop. I also got a super cheap 4 track mixer but it's a piece of shit that seems to constantly emit some buzzing from inside the unit, and it gets in all my recordings so I've become a eq grandmaster.
Any recs on a good brand of mixer that won't spread noise everywhere?

Probably not the answer you're looking for, but I've been using a cheap Harbinger L1202FX for years and haven't had any noise spread issues (that I have noticed).
