If this doesn't help you can also ask about temazepam, which is quite a bit stronger but doesn't last very long. It is kind of an instant hit and is pretty much guaranteed to put you to sleep when you need to.
But I would consider that a last resort, it is what they give to chemo patients.
Also I know this is kind of an obvious question but have you tried to put your circadian rhythm back in order by forcing yourself to stay awake until the evening? I do this sometimes and as long as you get to the evening and wait for a tired spell it works for me.

I cannot recommend Temazepam unless you are in severe physical pain (I'm talking third degree burns). It is very addicting and can stop you from being able to fall asleep without them and make matters even worse for future you. I wouldn't recommend medical sleeping aids at all, at the very least not untill you have tried out
mah sleepin beats!
I try staying awake to get back into bed early the next day sometimes, but that hardly ever works. So many times I find myself just pushing through the tiredness, end up enjoying the tired state and stay awake way past midnight anyway, sometimes multiple days untill I shut down completely.
As some epic programmer hero once told me its ok to not sleep as long as you get the code done, words that have really inspired me. Can't sleep? Great! You can WORK MORE!

i have tried to sort my body clock out, and it makes enormous sense, but cupz pretty much said it. although im not even fighting through tiredness. take last night for example, i slept from 5am-8am, and im still awake at 1.30am now, i walked a good 7 miles today, did a load of mentally draining stuff, and im still awake. i feel mildly tired but its not enough to fall asleep.
im kinda apprehensive to go to the doctors, ive been before and been given a lecture about the danger of addiction and sleeping tablets, got given a leaflet and 2 weeks worth of zopiclone which didnt even work (?) saw another doctor and she she was so sure i was depressed (i was in floods of tears explaining to her that i couldnt sleep and that no one understands lol but i hadnt slept at all for 3 days... i think you'd cry too to be honest) she prescribed me 40mg citalopram, which was just insane. so i was still awake all night and spending the whole day incredibly listless and drowsy. gross.
if you've got any suggestions how to speak to my doctor, tell me. seems like a stupid question but im obviously doing something wrong. can i really just go in there and request something specific?
also poppy tea....i thought that sounds natural...so illegal dude, i cant even get that

totally went over my head that it even would be

This is a very common problem with GPs and their equivalents around the world, depression is really over-diagnosed. I agree that not sleeping for 3 days would make me ball my eyes out.
Regardless, if she thought you had depression she should have referred you to therapy as well. They always work best in conjunction with each other.
Incidentally I have been on a different antidepressant to you for a few days now and I know exactly what you are talking about

Dizzy, numb, a bit of a zombie. That effect usually wears off but it takes time, or so I hear lol.
Anyway back to the topic, are you able to pinpoint any obvious cause for this? I'm thinking stress here, you're a uni student if my memory serves? When you go to bed are your thoughts completely racing and you just can't stop?
I shouldn't have even mentioned temazepam really, and cupz is right you should address it in any way possible before using sleeping pills. If you are stressed by loads of problems that all add up I would very much recommend Mindfulness Meditation, it gives you a bit more head-space and room to breathe. My self or Mexi can send some book suggestions your way if you are interested

Finally, what are you doing before bed? Looking at any LCD screen including TV, monitor or tablet during the evening stops the production of melatonin which keeps you from sleeping properly. There is tonnes of research on that. If you do I would strongly recommend
https://justgetflux.com/ or if you have an android device
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... x&hl=en_GBThese programs change the colour of your display and you can read all about it on the flux website including links to research.

I had a period of insomnia a few years back, it was fucking horrible. My girlfriend at the time had a somewhat "flexible" view of fidelity, sleeping with other guys when she got drunk. I got into a situation where I was so anxious about it that I just couldn't sleep. Early one morning, about 5am I think, I'd been awake for 3 days. I went nuts. I went round to my girlfriend's mum's house and banged on the door trying to find out where she was. She ended up having to take me home. I'm not sure what happened after that, but a few days afterwards I had a complete breakdown. Had to stay off work for a couple of months.
They put me on Zopiclone to get to sleep at night, Buspirone to help with anxiety during the day as a general leveller, then Diazepam just to take when I needed it. I'm on Citalopram anyway, so I was on 4 different drugs for it.
It was a scary time. I truly learned the value of sleep.

I have a horrible feeling I've already shared this horrible story at some point already on this forum, and that you are all going to think I'm a tragic mess who repeats himself for validation.

Nope

I can't imagine being on four things at once. I already have my fears about antidepressants by themselves.

Luckily I'm not on 4 things anymore, just the 1.
You do really have to be careful with Diazapam/Valium. It's a bit TOO nice.

I have a script for 2mg diaz and I know what you mean. It is like alcohol without the nasty hangover or dissociation.
It is very short term, only while I am waiting for this antidepressant to kick in. I am being very careful with it and spacing out it's use. It is addictive and makes me really foggy and fucks with my memory.
Generally I'm just taking one in the evening atm, when I feel I need it.
TBH I wish I could be done with both of them and just crawl my way out of depression my self, but I've tried for years and no dice.
Sorry to derail the thread.

thanks so much for this! the links really helpful....im guilty of looking at various screens when i cant sleep/ to help me fall asleep
and yeah im in 3rd year of uni and the amount of work is immense, and im kinda stressing about my next step because i still dont know what to do with my life lol. im not sure, sometimes im not thinking of anything, and im wide awake, but i dont know if its in my subconscious somewhere. or maybe ive just got into such a horrific sleeping pattern now my bodys just continuing the trend.
does meditation really work? ive read a little about it in the last hour or so, and - this sounds silly- it looks a bit difficult :s do you find it works?
dont be sorry for mentioning temezepam, if i could get it i would

im sure your side effects will settle down btw, i only stuck it out for about 4 weeks before i gave up, it wasnt conducive to getting any of my essays done, and to be fair if you're actually depressed the benefits are probably more obvious, i remember just being frustrated that i was still tired

you're spot on dude, sleep (or lack of) can totally change your personality. its scary. but its like pms, at the time you think how you feel is justified and normal, then you look back and think...wtf was i thinking

Yeah, but then you post about it to a bunch of strangers on an internet messageboard anyway.
I would look into the idea of Sleep Hygiene. It's really simple stuff, but it does make a difference. Maybe not when you're in the worst of it, but it's worth a try. I actually force myself not to interact with others for about an hour before I go to bed. I put my phone on silent, don't go on the internet etc. It really helps relax me, having that as part of my routine.
It turns out that other people just really fucking wind me up.

Meditation is fantastic and I'd recommend it for anyone. Takes practice, but the benefits are tangible in my experience.

If you mean the gnaural tutorial, yeah that's not what I mean. You need to download and run the gnaural software and load my file into it, otherwise you'd have to download a 3 gb flac.

ahh but no one is bothered on here either way, everyone properly loses their shit at least once! tired or not! dont worry about it. i will give the sleep hygiene thing a go, i get so bored of trying to fall asleep that eventually the phone comes out, the tv goes on, etc. but yeah probably isnt helping anything at all is it.
cupz i will download that then, sorry totally dense sometimes

Looks like I'm back in the insomnia club so I thought it best to report here immediately.
Due to child/ex-partner related anxieties, I've just done my second night of about 2 hours sleep. I'm not even able to sleep on the bus at the moment, which is annoying.
The worst thing about not being able to sleep is, the lack of relief. There is no escape at the end of the day. It's just a relentless march through slowed-down hours. Everything seems longer. The whole idea of having more time to do the stuff you need to do doesn't really work out, because you just feel like shit. It's hard to concentrate on anything.
Alcohol is tempting, but I'm 33 years old, so my hangovers involve 2 days of guilt and sadness. Not a good idea Stephen.

I'm going to see how it works out. I only want to use medication as a last resort. I'm hoping once I can get things sorted in the real, physical world, then my brain will calm down without having to use tranquillizers.

I had a reply all typed out that vanished :shakefist: but in all seriousness consider some kind of meditation. I use it sometimes though not as often as I should and it does take some of the edge off. It doesnt so much make me sleep easiee but if nothing else, the process of doing it seems to refresh me enough to cope with the sleep im missing
