How Music Works by David Byrne. Maybe 20% memoir, 80% Byrne's experiences in the musical world, from the literal context in which humans found themselves developing different kinds of music to his direct/indirect experience with how labels finance (or don't finance) releases.

I'm nearly done with it - the upcoming chapter I'm most excited about is what I believe are his guidelines for how a music scene lives and thrives -- welcome advice for someone in a town where the music scene still hasn't quite recovered from COVID.

It's so good! I had the pleasure of meeting David and seeing him present this in a theatre in Minneapolis in I believe 2012-2013. I think it was at the Walker Art Center. I didn't know what to expect walking in as I was honestly just really excited to see him in person, but I ended up really enjoying the presentation!

I would have a signed copy of it still, however when I went to the restroom I set it on the paper towel dispenser and someone walked in, grabbed it, and ran out before I finished my business. I guess they really needed a copy lol.

Yeah, it's a great book, but that felt like a BIG omission. I think at the very least least a bit on the Kranky roster could have fitted nicely into the last couple of chapters. I did get some great new listening from it though, this in particular, stood out, just an absolutely astounding album from someone I'd never really heard before -

Currently ripping through The Rifles, William T. Vollmann, for book club. It's a very indulgent style, flowery and changing voice/perspective often, but also highly readable? I'm not too far into it and don't know what to expect, but I wanted to break into Vollmann's bibliography and wasn't ready for Europe Central.

A bit of a project amidst all the stuff I'm usually reading but I feel like it'd elucidate something, unsure what exactly, about TH

Trying to get through Guy Debord, Society of The Spectacle. Good book but I hit a wall a few chapters in because I'm not well versed in Marxist abstractions.

Currently working my way through The Vampire Lestat and enjoying it a little bit more than Interview With the Vampire.

Didn't know the story was so short and surprisingly the video game had more depth to it. Laugh Track is so cute and disturbing I love it. Boy And His Dog was kind of dumb and rapey but I appreciate how influential it has been to post-apocalyptic fiction (and did it inspire Xentrix somehow? There's an underground civilization.)

Just finished Condensed Chaos by Phil Hine, now resuming where I left off about 10 chapters into The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall. Fun read, but definitely historically dubious in some places, as a lot of esoteric literature from the early 20th century was.

Confessions by St. Augustine of Hippo has been the most formative book that I have read in the past year. I am constantly recalling its lessons and the humility that Augustine shows is something that I have been obsessing over since I finished the work. Looking forward to when I dive further into his writings!

i'm about to finally read the road for the first time, myself!

my wife and i are headed to Ireland and Scotland (first time for me!), so I picked up We Don't Know Ourselves by Fintan O'Toole - kind of a fun mix of memoir and modern history of Ireland

I was at Newbury Comics yesterday to pick up Inferno on CD and while I was there I grabbed the first volume of Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond manga. Pretty cool so far. I'm not a huge manga person, but I love samurai stuff.
