I might be wrong, but I think Arthur C Clarke pretty much disowned it. It a bog-standard (and not very well done) Sci-Fi movie. None of the vision or ambition of the original. I'm old enough to have gone to see it at the cinema and I've seen it a few times since. Really, really poor imo.

Yesterday I watched this movie and I must say it's worth almost every word of praise it's getting so far.
Some words from
Ain't It Cool News critic Harry refering this movie, his pick for best movie of 2008
1. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN - The Swedish masterpiece. When I saw this at FANTASTIC FEST this year, I was floored. I’ve seen it twice and holy shit. Tomas Alfredson, the director of this vampire masterpiece is simply amazing. Made for a microscopic portion of the budget of THE DARK KNIGHT, destined to reside in obscurity due to being Swedish… we have perhaps the best Vampire film ever made. A film starring two 12 year old kids in the most adult and brilliant story of the year. It has the best actress performance of the year, Lina Leandersson, but will go unrecognized as such. I pray that it will at least garner a Best Foreign Film nomination, but its distribution company doesn’t have the sort of money it takes to attract enough Academy Members’ attention – but make no bones about it. I’ve seen the competition and LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is the tops. It has won 11 Best Film awards at film festivals and Critic associations around the world – of all kinds. And it won the top spot in my heart as well.

It didn't affect me much. I mostly cheered for the cannibals, since they got pwned first.
I loved the main theme of the soundtrack though. So nostalgic!
Hell yes! I fell in love with that song the moment I started the film..and now I can listen to it anytime

I saw The Swimmer some time ago at my nephews hous. One of the most BoC'iest films around. Its really trippy and weird, but not at all at the same time. A definate MUST SEE!

i watched 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time a few weeks ago, and, I have to say, that movie is the most intense mindfuck i have experienced in a long time. absolutely atonishingly beautifully beyond any movie i've ever watched.
also, there is a belgian mock-documentary called Man Bites Dog (US title), which is about a charismatic serial killer named Benoit. it documents his escapades in an unflinchingly violent way that dabbles in the realm of Irreversable. i definitely recommend it.
as far as violence goes, i recommend Ichi the Killer (Japanese), just to see how much you can tolerate. sick shit. Also, probably one of the greatest mindfucks of all time is Begotten. that one is held in high esteem as well.

I also recommend Man Bites Dog, it's one of my favourite movies. Actually when I was around age 12 it was one of the first movies (either Man Bites Dog or Clockwork Orange) that I saw that were "alternative". I remember it was such a relief to find art that actually contained emotional and philosophical deepness, I had been craving for that all my life..

i agree, the swimmer is such a bizarre yet heartbreakingly beautiful movie - recommended!
nice to see man bites dog getting a mention also, one of my all time favourites.

yeah i had a similar experience, but with Requiem for a Dream. I was really into it around age 12 or so because it was my first insightful film experience and probably defined my taste in film presently.

I saw 2001 recently, too! Fucking amazing!
So you've seen Begotten then? I've been looking for a copy of it but it seems to be out of print and the copies available for purchase are ridiculously expensive. Look legitimately scary.

That one was alright. I watched it without any stomach movements or shock.
I think the violence is a bit over-rated.
Cannibal Holocaust did...
