Though, what bugs me a little is it seems to me that everyone is more interested in the old material than hearing brand new material... I'd rather hear a new EP than polished versions of songs I've already heard..?

Every man to his own, personally I'd like to hear ALL unreleased tracks. But to many old-time BOCcers (like me) I think the pre-Twoism releases - along with their now almost mythical song titles, running times, artwork etc - hold a kind of legendary status, like a holy grail of BOC! It would be great to put music to at least some of those titles at last. For myself I'm particularly fond of the sparseness of the early material, and don't forget that the leaked tapes represent only a small fraction of the music they made during this era.
MDG said this archiving project was underway 9 years ago; I'd just like to know if its any where near yielding some results

I wouldn't say they are more interested in this stuff than new material, but its been a long time coming and it would be nice to have some closure/definitive word on that era. I'm all about looking forward, but I think we're finally due for a look back too.

personally, i think they should release a boxset of all unreleased tracks & outtakes along with a new album/ep (if they happen to be working on one), and then reissue old stuff (maybe even the pre-twoism stuff) on tape

I think a Boxset is no longer forthcoming sadly. Although at one time I am pretty sure the intention was there judging from that old post from MDG on the matter, I think they have decided to move on. One of their more recentish interviews said something like they had catalogued all their old stuff and how it took a lot of time but they will have something to leave their children.

It makes me wonder how much they actually feel the need or desire to release some of the trove of unreleased tracks MHTRTC onward. I think its clear how hard they work on their material and I wonder if they consider the return on it worthy. In other words, how much does widespread music piracy affect their decision to release something? We know they aren't just doing it for the money either but it must be kind of sad to have someone not pay for what you worked so hard to create. Streaming services pay fuck all to artists as well. Hmmm...

Personally, I kinda doubt that they place a financial value on their work as much as an artistic one. I imagine that what is unreleased has remained that way because they didn't think it was good enough for their own high standards. We know from the Old Tunes tapes that they re-use elements of old tracks in later compositions. I wouldn't be surprised if elements of a lot of the unreleased stuff has been reworked into tracks we know anyway.

I actually rather like it that unreleased albums etc. live in our imaginations. There's something healthy in that, especially in such an age of instant access to everything. We're very lucky to be left such mysteries.

Yeah there is something to be said for leaving your audience wanting more too. It keeps us tuned in.

i think its wishful thinking tbh, re-releases yes but a box set seems far fetched to me considering.

Exactly. I never ever want to sound condescending or anything like that but because you can't transmit the tone of your voice through text, I can see myself sometimes seeming to be like that
