Ok, I was at the bar last night watching highlights of the world cup. The sound was muted and there was this techno track playing, but it fit perfectly with the highlights. I've never been a fan of soccer or football (what is the correct term for someone in the states?) but I was very intrigued. It definately sparked an interest for me to start watching, but where does a noob like me start? I don't know the good teams or the rules or anything.

Ouch! But don't worry, Holland's loss will certainly be avenged by mighty England, right?

Oh my word!!!!!

I cant actually get across how bad this guy was last night. What a complete shambles and embarrassment to the game.
Image

Sunday's match between Portugal and the Netherlands, in which 16 yellow cards and four reds were shown, brought the total of red cards in Germany 2006 to 23 in 52 matches. The four red cards were the most in any single World Cup match.

A total of 291 yellow cards have been shown in Germany, more than the previous record of 272 for the entire competition in Japan and South Korea four years ago.

And thats with 12 games left!!!!!!

This World Cup has seen some truely horrific refereeing.

I agree. Last night was a total shambles. That might be the worst refereeing performance of all time! Shocking, truly shocking.

I won't say much about it because as I'm still very upset.

Being eliminated by a team who plays better football is one thing but being eliminate by a team who act like this doesn't feel right.. not to mention Ivanov.

There should be a rematch where the actual playing time is about 85 minutes and not 65.

Didnt rate that Kuyt at all last night. And Van Nistelrooy not even making an appearance! Whats that all about.

It was the game with the most cards shown, and most letters you can possibly get on the back of a football shirt

Figo is free to play England

Yeah looks like Figo got away with it. He deserves to miss a match for it but i think V Bommel does too. He hardly touched him and he went down like he'd been shot it the head. I hate that.

I agree. Although Van Bommel got what was coming. Theyre out. So maybe he deserves it. Apparently the ref gave Figo a yellow about 2 mins after the headbutt. That to me says he didnt see it. If he had, Figo should have walked imo. But hey, the way that ref was performing loads of decisions would have been called the wrong way. He had no control at all and the players started playing him. Taking dives etc etc. Not good to see. As for Robben, No suprises there. He did what hes been doin since he started at Chelski. Achiving high status in amateur dramatics!

Disgraceful and unfair. What a bunch of cheats. I never thought i'd be standing up for an Aussie sports team, but that's just not on!

I'm with you on that one. Germany is one of my three ethnicities/nationalities left to cheer for. Damn, I wish I was Brazilian!

Have those of you who watched the Germany matches noticed how much better the refereeing has been there than in almost every other match? :?

No supprises there from the Italians. There has been way WAY too much simulation in this tournament. Its become beyond a joke. Im a big footie fan and it kills me to say it but video replays have got to come into this game. They really have. Big tournaments like this need them. The refs are getting played for fools.
