Geogaddi Under-appreciated?

Okay, so I know it gets tons of love here, but outside of this forum, Geogaddi just doesn't get as much love as MHTRTC. I think it is in every way just as good as Music Has The Right, it just has a heavier and darker edge to it. Even when I spoke to my cousin the other day about his opinions on BoC albums, he responded with "Music Has The Right To Children is incredible. An instant classic. Geogaddi on the other hand is crap, why would they make it so damn scary, it just doesn't fit in with their otherwise pretty friendly discography. It scares the hell out of me."

I don't think Geogaddi is under-appreciated.

It's not for everyone. For those who dig its style it's generally their favorite. It's my favorite for sure but I somewhat understand why some people who preferred the tone of MHTRTC don't care for it.

What I don't understand are the people who act like the dark sound is somehow not present on MHTRTC as well. It's nothing new, BoC has been doing it for a long time.

Anyways, calling it "crap" though? Now that's just over the line. No BoC is crap.

Agree with both of you (fence sitter? Me?!?)

I think alot depends on where you started with BOC. I discovered Geogaddi first and took me a while to get into MHTRTC. Preferred the darker sound. Having said that, I agree with Rodheh, I do think people over play how 'dark' Geogaddi is. Go listen to the last Deaf Centre record if you want genuinely dark and disturbing.

Each album has it's own feel, I find it hard to really pick a favourite as I'll happily sit through the whole BoC catalogue and not want to skip a track. This isn't unique to BoC, I am the same with most I listen to.
Over time artists change, their perceptions of what they do and what they like, brings with it changes in their material. Some don't like it and lose interest or try to slam it, some new people discover the material, that's how music goes/that's how life goes.
I imagine one of the worst things to hear as a musician is, "This new album is shit, I prefer your old stuff". I would rather let them get on with what they are doing, if they are happy, then who are we to judge? If you don't like it, don't listen, being vocal about it on really serves to make people look like prats.

Geogaddi is my absolute favourite album they've done and I could write a huge wall of text (again) about why, but I won't. I actually didn't like MHTRTC the first time round until I heard Geogaddi, which kind of "unlocked" BoC for me. So much good stuff on it, from the get go. Ready Lets Go *never* fails to give me chills.

I do think as an album its the darkest thing they've done, but it's not like the whole album's dark, or that they haven't done dark on ALL their albums. Maybe it's a bit more "serious" sounding than some of their other stuff? There's a bit more obvious humour or joy in the others... I'm sure its there in Geogaddi too but maybe its a private joke that time. Maybe the retro synths are a bit more downplayed? I'm reaching though, I don't know why someone who liked MHTRTC wouldn't like it.

Heh, I didn't get into BoC until I heard Chinook for the first time.

I naturally gravitated to Geogaddi, in part I believe, to the darker sound - as the synth in Chinook is "darker" sounding to me.

I'm definitely a person that won't/can't like an artist until that ONE song I hear kinda flips the mental switch. There have been a few groups like that for me...

I think most of their music is pretty dark... it's a very subtle thing most of the time though. To me there's usually overtones of paranoia or something unknown or dark.

I think Geogaddi is certainly more 'strange' and psychedelic.. which can make it more challenging. But I think most of their music is plenty dark and some of campfire headphase is included.

Talk about under appreciated... I feel like a lotta people hate on the campfire headphase for it being different but I honestly love that album and think it's some of their more gorgeous work. I love the more decayed tape-sound sorta guitar oriented stuff and I think it is incredible when it comes to textural type stuff.

hell nah. It ain't underated.
To me its sort of dark I guess, but it mostly takes on this euphoric, dense, and emotional feel.

Now, if I were to bring up something that I think is legitimately under appreciated...

i personally view, the campfire headphase, as the rodney dangerfield of their discography.

i usually dont see the campfire headphase getting much respect. and that is complete bullshit.

just because the album is easier to listen to than the rest of their work, doesnt make it any less incredible. i personally think its their most flowing, and most complete record.

Really? Because I've seen just the opposite. I've seen tons of people who tell me that Campfire is their favorite and that they "keep going back to it" while they can't listen to Geogaddi at all.

i very rarely see people say that on this forum.

How often do you browse this forum then?

I found a copy of Geogaddi on CD at a local thrift store. The fact that someone who owned Geogaddi could ever just give it away tells me that it is definitely under-appreciated by some.

I've lost two copies. One in a car crash, one god knows where. And I can't buy another one in case they do a rerelease.

all i am saying, is that i often see people praise music has the right to children and geogaddi far more often than i see them praise the campfire headphase.

why are you taking my statement personally. if you see it as the other way around, then that is fine.

I lent a friend my copy of the IABPOITC EP and never got it back. Solution: dub a cassette copy from FLAC :)

What is IABPOITC? I can't seem to find any direct information.

*edit: I realize what it is, now. I feel stupid for even asking.

I do have to agree- I recall people being more critical of campfire than anything really.. I think geogaddi is more dark but I don't think that means it's under-appreciated. To me it seems like a lot of fans rip on campfire because of its different sound- what with guitar based stuff and all that. I love both albums honestly.
