Yeah I agree, totally horrible devices yet extremely fascinating to watch.
I enjoyed watching these while relaxing and sipping hot chocolate at work this morning.

I wish they didn't exist, it boggles the mind why they are doing this on our own home.. tossers.

I have checked these videos. These are really informative and impressive. I am searching for some Atomic information as I am preparing assignment in the favor and against Atomic Energy and very pleased to find these impressive videos. super fascinating to watch these. hard to wrap my head around the scale of these explosions though.. its like space/time is forced to separate for a small period of time. even small scale explosions give me that feeling.

Utterly terrifying - especially when you think about how close we came several times to exchanging buckets of "instant sunshine" - Cuba, Able Archer.... I think there were a couple of other close calls too.

To think we were given ridiculous advice like "hide under a table" (Protect and Survive) if the warning ever sounded.

Yep, its absolutely insane how close things got, especially Cuba. Apparently the US navy dropped depth charges to force submarines to surface, the Soviets understood this as an act of aggression and 2 of the 3 commanders were in favour of launching a warhead. Luckily, all 3 commanders had to agree in order to launch, one said no, thus avoiding almost certain nuclear war.

It's not just the diplomatic situations which have caused the near misses though, I remember reading about a remote Soviet radar station picking up 5 ICBMs approaching, thankfully the sole operator at the radar, went against orders to instantly alert high command (when a situation like that arose) and deduced that if America were attacking they would send a hell of a lot more than 5 warheads. That one act of sense under immense pressure virtually saved the world because the Soviets would of certainly retaliated. The guy was lauded on both sides of the iron curtain as a hero, but then it dawned on the Soviets that he had not done as supposed to, because he didnt alert higher command of the situation, so eventually he was severely disciplined. KGB style.

I also remember reading about a similar situation where radar operators were being trained at the Pentagon for a nuclear attack scenario, but the demo system tape/disk was left in after training was completed and confused as the real thing. There was a huge scare for 10 minutes, until they realised the system was still running the demo scenario. Now all training is apparently done off site to avoid something like that happening. Absolute stupidity when you think about it.
