Ive been going through some threads. Specifically the one talking about Boards of Canada and drugs. Well id like to know: Are there any boc fans who DONT even think about drugs/dont use drugs or dont think about drugs when you want to listen to Boards of Canada?
That you have a mentality that boc is is for a more reflective/spiritual/ you name it purpose other than to get high?
It sort of bothers me people use boc for that..

When I first heard them I was quite sober and was quite blown away; decided I would pursue their catalogue. However, after listening to them in a not-so-sober state, I was amazed by the attention to detail and the amount of intricacies put into their work and I must say, gave me a deeper appreciation for what they did and will do.
I guess a little of both

I'm going to go ahead and say this is a
very condescending thing to say/post. Whether you do or don't do drugs doesn't make you better or worse. But if you think you're better for not doing drugs then you're projecting a very negative and foolish perspective.
People who take drugs and listen to BoC aren't just "listening to their music to get high"... that's a pretty ignorant thing to say. But this statement leads me to believe that you don't have much experience with drugs and therefore no reference point- so once again an ignorant thing to say lol.
I'll say this, the members of BoC themselves have admitted to taking psychedelics and that it inspires their music, which is DEFINITELY psychedelic music in ways. And I don't
need drugs to enjoy BoC at all but when on this stuff listening to BoC can most definitely be a reflective/spiritual experience.
Certain drugs correlate well with music period. There's a symbiosis in there... they create each other. So I listen to them when I do drugs, and when I don't. In both mind states, they're incredible.

Smells a little troll-ish in here. I'd say that BoC inspired me to give psychs a try when I was younger, but I'm too old to get high every time I listen to them. I'm probably sober 99% of the time I listen to them.
You definitely don't need to be high to enjoy them but I do have some nice paper set aside for whenever the new album finally drops.

I've never done anything more than a smoked a lot of green in my early 20s and kinda grown out of it now as I approach 30 (giving up smoking cigarettes helped). I've never listened to BoC while stoned but I have nothing but happy memories of listening to great music while high and I'm sure next time I light up a bong I'll stick TCH on. MHTRTC and Geogaddi don't seem like particularly green-friendly albums but I might be surprised.
So yes, in answer to your question I've never done any drugs since I've been into BoC so yes it is possible. I'd also like to add my support to TaoTapeTao's post as well - I canny be going preachy straight-edgers.

I suppose I am, in that I deliberately and consciously gave up all "naughties" a few years ago.Doesn't affect my enjoyment of music at all.

It never crossed my mind to get stoned or anything while listening to BoC. I guess I've grown up with a lot of psychedelic music around the house so it's just normal to me. The times in my life when I have been high haven't coincided with listening to particularly reflective music. It has almost always been a far more euphoric focus.
I'm often at my most receptive to the detail in music when I'm it that hypnagogic state just before sleep, and I have consciously listened to BoC when extremely tired or sleep-deprived. In all honesty that has been a more intense and mind-expanding experience than any drug-induced state.

When I was younger I was all about drugs, wont go into detail but through college and stuff it was just a daily thing, but ditched it all when I turned 20 and it was strange because thats when I started to dig deeper into music, I'd always liked BoC but at that point they seemed like the answer to everything I'd looked for and I've never looked back, just great music to help open your mind and kick back to and watch the world.

You like what you like, there is no right or wrong way to listen to music. Focus on what you get out of it, under the influence or not. The music obviously lends itself to psychedelic imagery/experiences but that's not to say you need drugs to connect with this aesthetic/vibe; though for some people it helps, for others it doesn't. Enjoyable either way

I qualify, I guess. I drink rarely and I've never done drugs, and I don't think about drugs when I listen to them.

Well..as someone who uses psychedelic drugs more often than most, I've never needed to use them to appreciate good music. BoC's music definitely fits the stereotype, but anyone who has experience/knowledge of hallucinogenics or anything psychoactive will tell you they're simply an enhancer. It makes the music that much more intimate, makes you connect to it in a new perspective. To be frankly honest, there's been times when I've been more enlightened by Boards of Canada's music while sober than when I'm totally twisted on drugs. The last time I did mushrooms, I threw on Geogaddi (it's my favourite record of theirs, and my third-fave record of all time) and it scared the mortal shit out of me. And don't think I'm inexperienced..I do acid at least 1-2 times a month. Sometimes drugs can just catch you off guard.
So..to make things short - don't assume everyone on the forum is a drug user, just because BoC makes trippy-ass music. Some of the best musicians I know don't touch drugs, and make some of the most crazy psychedelic tunes out there. Just look at Tobacco! The guy admitted on Reddit he doesn't do any of that shit, and if he comes out with BMSR then it just proves that the "normal" people are often more fucked-up (in a good way, lol) than us psychonauts.
(end rant)

Wait, I thought that was me.
I've never touched any illegal/controlled substances and have no plans to. I want to keep my body pure, and I don't want to become an addict because I dislike the idea of being a slave to anyone or anything.
Sounds like we're on the same page. *hug*

I will reiterate and say that I've done many drugs and regret none of it. I'm tired of this polarity between drugs or no drugs. It's not so black and white. Some people do em, some people don't. Neither is better

Not trying to be rude here in any way, but this is an
extremely narrow and frankly very condescending way to look at drug use. Please understand that it's not just a fine line between using something from time to time and being an addict.
With that in mind, I should also point out that your body creates a whole bunch of different chemical experiences akin to drug use: dreaming is a very psychedelic-esque experience. Endorphins are very opiate-like.
I'm not telling you to do drugs or anything, and I respect your decision to refrain from using them, but whenever I see this "pure" shit I want to punch a hole in the wall. It is very likely that you partake in caffeine usage like the majority of the world. Need I call that impure? Or is it just the substances that the government have decided for you are not okay? What discerns the two enough to the extent where you can just dismiss all controlled substances as being impure and likely to enslave the user?

just remember to tell your anesthetist this before you have major surgery because guess what, fentanyl is just as addictive as real heroin!
