nah jk but srsly dude he's had material before 2000, list some of his great stuff, not just his good stuff.

I'd say start out with Odelay, that's the best possible place you could start with Beck, and then literally go an anywhere you want with the rest of his discog because you've got the grounding.

Stereolab are one of my favourite bands, and Dots & Loops is one of my favourite records of all time, so not just you Julian, but I feel this is as important as listening to Dark Side of the Moon or Revolver for ANYONE.

I seriously don't know why Aesthetics had a thing against Burial's Untrue, but I think that record is moving, brilliant and heartbreaking.

Jai Paul's unofficial tape is a must for anyone who's into just catchy as fuck music. It's like, a much more interesting version of Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience, which I thought was a great record to start out with.
It's a little difficult to find but if you want it, hit me up.

Finally, saving probably the most divisive piece for last, the new Chance the Rapper mixtape is for me, a brilliant mix of Outkast future funk production, some elements of trap and footwork beats, and a quirky interesting flow that at times sounds like a mix of Danny Brown and old school Eminiem, but is entirely Chance's own creation.
It's some crazy shit which I am absolutely loving, but I can totally dig it if no one else here likes it.

Also dude, use RateYourMusic, I can't tell you how much music from times gone I've found on that site.
Every now and again I'll just open up Youtube and RateYourMusic on tabs right next to each other and spend a night going through an obscure genre like Nigerian jazz or African fuzz rock, just looking for hidden gems.
Expanding yr taste is good for everyone involved.

*shrug* Odelay was the first Beck album I heard, and it took me a while to bother looking further than there. It's fun enough I guess, but it's easily my least favorite of the Beck albums I've heard, and I don't think I've bothered going back to it much since exploring further. The Information took me a few listens to wrap my head around, but most of it is fantastic. And Modern Guilt has "Orphans" and "Chemtrails" on it -- I think Beck would still be up there with some of my favorite artists if his career had consisted solely of those two songs.

Also- to give a few cents to the topic here- Milieu and Coppice Halifax have a TON to offer- ambient/electonica/IDM/dub techno/experimental sounds. The man behind both names is Brian Grainger- I believe he actually posted some things on Twoism years back. He also releases under his own name- which is released on Attacknine for fans of Freescha and Casino Versus Japan. Anyway- strongly recomend visiting the Milieu Bandcamp site, and looking into the Coppice Halifx and BG outputs. Some great stuff.

Have also been enjoying The New Mystikal Troubadours lately- good psych-folk rock.

I think they're not bad, or at least the slogans are above the usual leftist band ranting - really modernistic stuff, they really have read their Marx, and it's even up-to-date (you can trace the lyrics of Vonal Declosion to the Badiou quote I mention in some other post.) Sadly the French and the lalala's tend to distract people from this, but I think lounge nostalgia and "pop culture" is hardly their point.

It's not high poetry but I've always had a soft spot for things like "high rise living/not so bad".
