I wasn't sure how I should title this, or if it's been discussed before on here (I did a search, honest, but I got 31 pages of results and there's no way I'm looking through that many).

Any one else on here into the scuzzier side of the rock n' roll rainbow? Here's some bands I'm thinking of-

Ty Segall
The Spits
Jeff the Brotherhood
Black Lips
Jon Spencer (various incarnations)

Basically anything that's on In The Red, HoZac, Castleface and so on.

Holy fuck yes. You named all the great (modern) garage rock bands. Ty Segall is awesome, Thee Oh Sees... all awesome. but by far, my favorite band is the Black Lips. I've been following them since 2004 and I have seen them 9 times. Some of the best shows I've ever seen. I saw a few secret ones in Brooklyn loft apartments that were literally nuts. I hung out with them at every show so far. I mainly talk to Ian and Cole when i see them. So down to earth, we talk about unknown artist, songwriting and drink beers..... Awesome thread to start.....

Endless Boogie are worth a listen. They're like Canned Heat/Stooges stoner rock, repetitive, groovy and gnarly. Check out The Savagist from the LP Long Island for a statement of intent.

Maybe not what you're thinking of, but definitely scuzzy, literally garage, and very much rock.

I know nothing of some the others on your list, but come the end of this night I certainly will.

Really like Thee Oh Sees at the moment. Also listened to a lot of Jon Spencer over the years but it all started with The Stooges for me. I listen to their first two albums regularly. I think The Cramps are fucking ace too. Also love the original Nuggets compilations. The Elastik Band - Spazz is probably my most listened to from those comps.

Anyone else listen to Wooden Shjips? The Vol.1 and Vol.2 releases by them are great (they're all good tbf). Sounds like old psychedelic garage rock crossed with shoegaze/drone to me. Proper wig out stuff. Their cover of Neil Young's Vampire Blues is really fucking good.

Hell yes. I was raised on the OG 60's garage.... Nugget's comps are classic. The Seeds, The Sonics, 13th Floor Elevators, The Castaways, the list goes on and on.... Love it all. The Pebbles comps go even deeper with so many unknown artists.... So raw. Some of the tracks are even listed as "Unknown".

As far as a more modern shit, we should probably mention 2 of the bigger underground bands that held it down in the 90's:

All true.... What did you think about the 2nd Impala album? I thinks it's great but I feel it lacks some of the strong melody like the first one. The 2nd one feels very experimental, and not as focused. Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome... But I think the first one is one of the best records of the last 15 or 20 years.

Speaking of Jay Reatard (RIP - oh the music that dude would be making if he'd lived)...

I just wish he'd lived long enough to finally ditch the "Reatard" name, like he was planning to do apparently, because he was outgrowing it (when you pick a stage name at 15, by your late 20's it may not seem so clever anymore).

Well you know about his other band The Lost Sounds Right? He did a lot of great albums with that project. They had a synth.... Those albums are sick.

Haven't really looked into garage rock much, but what I've heard, I like. A lot.

And of course there's tons of old/early stuff. I used to run a blog posting 60s/70s garage/garagepunk stuff, sadly now it's down, but I've still loads of comps and albums I can share with you if you wish.

Also if some of you is into surf as well, got plenty of that too, I am a huge fan - specifically of that "zombie surf" stuff like The Ghastly Ones, or pure fuzz instrumental surf (to be clear, not that pop melodic surf like Beach Boys!).

Michael K. from The Cynics is a sometimes caller to The Best Show on WFMU (3 hrs of mirth, music and mayhem) and is an expert at telling stories that go absolutely nowhere and getting on the host's nerves, in the best way possible. Him and CoCo from the Ettes are two of the many fun musical weirdos who call in there and have Tom (the host) hovering his finger over either the bleeper or the hangup function.

The Black Angels would fit, Austin's finest! And seconded on the BJM, I played in a band with 2 guys that recorded w/Anton and some of the stories they would tell, geeeeezzzzeee! Total nutter but a mad genius at heart. And also seconded on Dead Meadow, great band live.
