Why San Francisco? It surely has meaning, this is BoC, after all.

Zodiac killer, perhaps?

With silicon valley a few miles away, San Francisco is commonly seen in sci fi movies about the future as a sort of second capital of the United States. A city that brings us to the future. And with all the themes of Nuclear War, it seems like the perfect place for a ground zero nuclear event in the retro-futuristic sci fi movie that is Tomorrow's Harvest.

That fits a very likely larger narative. I'm sure as this is BoC, that there is a much more specific reason for the choice. The zodiac thing was a silly stab in the dark, but I'm sure there is something more specific about it. They have a large Branch Davidian population in SF?

I didn't actually notice it was transparent at first. Originally I just saw the cover as a desert view with the city shrouded in fog or something in the background (why San Francisco would be surrounded by miles of barren desert I do not know) and it was only after the Sandisons said it was a ghost city in one of their interviews that I properly looked at it and made the connection.

Do any locals know if the fog really piles up as high as it looks under the city on the album cover? We thought they had pasted foothills between foreground and background at first, but now I'm torn between fog or maybe even rubble beneath the ghost of the city. It can during mornings and evenings. Can't specifically speak for the view from Alameda but when I was there last month I drove across the Golden Gate while encased in a thick, thick sea mist that reached nearly to the tops of the bridge supports. Rather lovely.

Yeah, there can tons of fog at times.

Google image search "San Francisco skyline fog" to get a more accurate idea

I live here too...but as beautiful as this city may be....it's a dirty, smelly, over priced, over stressed town. Aggressive homeless everywhere...smells like piss and shit on every corner. Garbage EVERYWHERE. Everyone's stressed out cuz there money barely covers rent (fuck living in the tenderloin unless you don't mind being accosted everyday or wanna risk getting stabbed walking home at night) NO PARKING ANYWHERE. Sure the presidio is nice...and sea cliff, but I don't have upwards of 5k a month for rent, or a couple million burning a hole in my pocket for a tiny house with no yard. I find the album cover fitting. This place feels like a city on the brink of a meltdown.

NYC is the same way.
I love this town, born and raised here...but it's becoming more and more untenable by the minute.

NYC here as well... and yes... even though I've only visited, I would say it's even more intense w/r/t what you mentioned about SF.

I was there with some family friends and they rented a cheap house in Sonoma and it was awesome... such easy access to amazing places. I would definitely rather be posted in Northern California than Southern.

I really like the art for the cover... it was something new and I think it was executed wisely.

Nice. I think the back cover holds some interesting bits too. Might be significant that the tracks are listed between the sun and the transmission towers. I think they carry power lines. Of course we can't know if it's sunset or rise, but taken with the title it does look like it's coming to getcha. The layers of foreground/background might imply steps, or a sequence.

yes, its all there. most noticeable when i go to a concert and walk to the Fillmore or in the Mission. i guess my love for SF is more of my memories as little kid growing up on Geary: a Russian deli on every corner, cool toys from Japan, a wild colorful clash of cultures. good times.

the stress, expense, poverty, etc. is part of any big city though and collapse is a good theme. as long as we continue to 'develop' using this flawed growth model instead of one where we focus on harmony and staying within our capacity, it will only get worse.

anyway - back to the cover ... i think it pretty much sums that all up with the transparent skyline and desert foreground. thats right where we are headed. no empire can last forever and most collapse under their own weight (Maya, Rome, Soviet Union). who will be next?

i was just back in Canmore [alberta] for my mums funeral...and though it was a tuff time...and a short visit...i felt human again. its so freakin beautiful and peaceful there. it was SO hard to leave.
landing back in SF made me feel ill. instantly the smells hit me. the peoples anger [i attribute to frustration [so expensive]] instantly apparent. i feel so out of place and disconnected from reality here.

i lived in LA for 15 years...that place was MUCH more hospitable than SF.

but after this past weekends visit...it makes me ask...just what the fuck am i doing in this town.
its the most beautiful city that is getting ready to implode.

note when you are here or if you live here....how the city is so nice above 6.5 feet...above where all the people in the city can make contact with it.

so...SF is perfect for the cover of an apocalyptically themed album.

from someone who has never lived in either city, i'd assume LA would be gnarlier in terms of pollution and expense. are you saying the area of San Francisco you live in is what makes you feel ill? more so than LA? I'm genuinely curious to hear more details about your experience living in SF.

LA is half the price of SF. and i lived in beverly hills. i live in a shit hole here in SF and pay 2800/month for a CRAPPY 1 bedroom. going no where fast here. and at the risk of sounding cheesy...this album is like a soundtrack for my time here.
