Just switched on 6 Music to hear the closing tones of 'Reach For The Dead' and heard Lauren Laverne say "Boards Of Canada, Mercury Music Prize contender, mark my words"

Imagine if they win it. It's doubtful they will turn up. Who will pick up the prize?

At least if they win they are already established. The Murcury prize is a jinx for newcomers.

She's just doing her pundit. The shortlist isn't announced for another couple of months.

I'd honestly be surprised if they were nominated for the prize for a variety of reasons. It tends to focus on new and upcoming artists, as far as I'm aware, but not always - whereas BoC are very established. Also the selections tend to be reasonably mainstream 'indie' acts... I sound stupid for saying this, but I'm just going by what I've seen previously. I might be completely wrong though

As long as Warp stump up the money to put them forward, I think they will be one of the final 12. The list is usually a mix of newcomers, different genres, and a few established artist to give the award a bit of publicity. BoC cover a few bases, plus people will wonder if they would turn up, perform, or do some kind of video.

It's not been a curse for all the newcomers. Dizzee has done ok for himself, and The XX are making a living.

If Burial can make the final short list why not BoC?
