I think 5.9.78 deserves it's own appreciation post. It is one of the most beautiful BoC songs and fades in perfectly from 'Boqurant'.

I think the intro to this song may be the most beautiful thing I have ever heard in my entire life. It's simply amazing.

I feel the synergy between the two and that transition in particular is really an underrated or overlooked aspect when it comes to that (or those two) track(s).

ive had times where i will be in my car driving, and 5:9:78 will begin to play, and i can honestly feel more awakened, than i did before.


this song really does have a very strong feeling of heartache to it, as does most of boc's music.


it sucks, because when i explain to people how this music makes me feel, they might take it as a depressing thing, when really it is more like a release, and it feels absolutely amazing to connect with music in this way.

I've heard a lot of people say they don't play their favorite music too often, in order to not wear it out. I often wonder if they are telling the truth, as I don't have that sort of restraint.

Except in two cases, out of my entire discography. I have only listened to Autechre's vletrmx 21 about 5 times, and same for BoC's 5-9-78. I think it is one of the most emotional musical experiences I've ever had, I'm literally afraid of listening to it too often, and ruining the feeling it gives me.

At one point when I was younger and more romantic, it was the track I was sure I wanted to play at my funeral, haha.

Amazing piece of music, and so "simple".

I remember hearing the first time a little over a year ago. Loved it.

I think a lot of it's power comes from the chord change from Bb to Ab major. Has a real wistful, profound quality to it. Try it out on a piano

(F Bb D) then (Ab C Eb). The D moving up to the Eb on top is real nice.

Also, near the very beginning, the Ab major chord is an F minor chord in stead. The motion between Bb major and F minor is definitely used for powerful/deep moments in movies, and also used to be pretty common in popular music. Not so much today.

The transition from Boqurant to 5.9.78 is my favorite BOC moment of their entire catalog. The seamless switch from such a melancholic simplicity to an overwhelming warmth is really powerful. It's always made me think of a long fall into deep water. Boqurant is that moment of helplessness, being alone and not in control, and all of the sudden you hit the water's surface and that same sound becomes muted and distant when 5.9.78 begins. There's optimism as you rise back up to the surface and feel the sun on your face when you come back to air.

That's some cheesy shit I know, but I really like that moment.

this is in my personal top 5 with EYDIAB, An Eagle in Your Mind, Nothing is Real and Roygbiv. I try not to listen to it too often, it feels like the most special song amongst a very private compilation of music

Yeah, the D at the top of the Bb major chord moving up to the Eb at the top of the Ab major chord. Throw in some ninths too if you want, i.e.

(F Bb C D) to (Ab Bb C Eb)

Yep agree, it's my favourite. It's a pity that the youtube video got removed as it was so appropriate. I loved that video ;( then one day it was gone....

I also love it and can't listen to it too often. I do it only on particular moments or in particular places. The atmosphere is important. It perfectly fits a bike ride around abandoned industrial areas of my town. I guess it would taste even better at dawn but I'm to lazy to get up so early. I think 'Open the light' has something to do with 5/9/78. Both evoke the same feelings in me.

There are a select few boc tracks that I love but have trouble listening to, because they just evoke so much emotion, that sometime I feel like I cant handle it. 5.9.78, Everything you do is a Balloon, You Could Feel the Sky, to name a few.
