Anybody know what the deal is with all these videos being blocked? Warp has never blocked them before. And whomever operates BoC's channel has it chocked full of fan videos. Warp even monetized my old Pete Standing Alone video. So what gives?

Has anyone had their video unblocked? Posting on Vimeo for now but it's not the same.

Are you sure it's Warp blocking them and not some updated YouTube algorithm automatically blocking copyrighted content?

I read a comment on YouTube along the lines of tchewnz's. Apparently if you dispute the block in your channel they will put the video live again.

It's a rather interesting situation. Obviously neither BoC nor Warp really seem to mind that almost the entire catalogue of available BoC material is up on YouTube. It would seem that BoC like the fact that fans make their own videos, even mentioning in a recent interview that they're looking forward to seeing what videos surface for Tomorrow's Harvest. But YouTube in RIAA copyright fascist mode is automatically taking down "infringing content". I wonder if YouTube will destroy the whole BoC fan video thing or if Warp will step in and set them straight?

Interesting. I didn't dispute the copyright claim because, after all, my video does contain copyrighted work. My assumption was that Warp would get notice of the flagged video and waive the claim allowing the video to go live. Like I said before, Warp has made my previous BoC video a featured video and monetized it. So I didn't they would allow this one to remain blocked. Pretty disappointing.

Warp isn't even part of the process. It's just Youtube doing it on its own.

YouTube developed what it calls the "Content ID tool" (also sometimes called the Video ID tool). According to YouTube, this system enables "copyright holders to easily identify and manage their content on YouTube." It works by checking every video uploaded against a database of audio and video "fingerprints" submitted by copyright owners. So when you upload a video, the Content ID tool can spot a song snippet used in that video, even if you never mention the name of the song or performer in the video description or title.

The copyright owner gets to decide what happens when there is a match by setting a "usage policy" — it can elect to Block, Track, or Monetize (i.e., put ads around the video and get a portion of the revenues). For some time, the major music labels have opted for the "Monetize" approach. Unfortunately, Warner Music recently changed its mind, reportedly unhappy with the amount of money it was receiving from YouTube. As a result, Content ID matches for Warner Music songs now result in automated removals. In most cases, no human looks at the videos — YouTube's computers spot the match and apply the "Block" usage policy automatically.

That sucks. Is warp affiliated Warner?

I don't really get how people are disputing the copyright. The only valid grounds for disputing are that your video falls under fair use (it clearly does not), you purchased a license to use the song (I didn't), you've been given written permission by the copyright holder (I have not), or the work is your own copyrighted work (it isn't).

So how are people disputing this in good faith? The only answer is for Warp to allow the use which they so far have not done.

I've just finished a course in copyright and to be honest I'm surprised that theres any fan videos on Youtube as that breaches the UK copyright act.

I don't know what you were taught, but the fan videos aren't necessarily breaching copyright - it all depends on the licensing model the copyright holder has chosen and how lenient they choose to be. For instance, a Creative Commons Attribution License is an agreement where the copyright holder allows the works to be freely copied as long as the creator's name and copyright information is not removed.

As polar sky explained above, YouTube provides a framework for managing copyrighted works in the system. The stricter copyright holders may choose to automatically block copyrighted works; the more lenient may choose to receive ad revenue - perhaps permanently, perhaps up to a point.

A copy of a copyrighted song is not necessarily infringing.

Of course it's a copyright violation. You really think there's a major record label on the planet that would use a creative commons license?

I just used Creative Commons as an example to illustrate that licenses and tolerances can vary greatly.

The classic copyright line is:

Unauthorised public performance, broadcasting and copying of this recording is prohibited.

YouTube provides a facility for copyright holders to authorise the broadcasting of their copyrighted material. Using that facility, when Warp allows the BoC fan videos to remain on YouTube, those works in that instance are not violating copyright.

I thought maybe because the brothers really didn’t like this version of the song so much that maybe they didn’t want it out there at all or something. But now I see this thread and realize I’m not alone. But why only certain songs?

Just the dumb algorithm I suppose. I’m not disputing or anything. Just thought Warp was super cool and might have had some agreement with YouTube to not block BoC manmade vids somehow… seeing as BoC fan-made vids are a part of the BoC culture. Guess not. Womp Womp.

Youtube Content ID detects it as the 2019 Peel Session reissue (even though it isn't) which Warp doesn't want any other uploads of. Not good for fan music videos and such, some have been taken down.

My XYZ upload got deleted only two or three weeks prior to the official release. So perhaps this is a good thing.
