A Few Old Tunes, A Few New Runes

(This post is going to be pretty short; sorry if it's already been brought up - if it has I haven't seen it in my searches.)

We're all familiar with Boards Of Canadas' Native American allusions - Sequoia, Kaini Industries, Pete Standing Alone... but there's what might be a subtler one.

You see, most Canadian Aboriginal languages are written in Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics, first devised some time in the 1840s. One of the main languages written in this script is the Inuktitut language.

The word "Canada" itself comes from the word "kanata", meaning "settlement" or "village" in one of the languages of the First Nations. In the Inuktitut language (a main official language in the territory of Nunavut), the word is the same - "kanata".

And how is that written in Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics, you ask?

"ᑲᓇᑕ", of course.

That they're Naitive Americans.

Although I believe this has nothing to do with the BoC name (as we all know the reason behind it), I do find the symbol resembling BoC to be another insane coincidence surrounding the Boards allure. Like a lot of stuff that came out during the code reveal- the mystery and "wtf, could it be related to this, that and the other?" that follows these guys does almost seem unreal at times. But maybe its just us crazies getting too deep most of the time. :)

i think its a stretch but i would agree it is still very cool and only adds to the allure. at some point you also begin to think how many things are coincidence? i still feel there are a lot of fun bits and pieces that have yet to come to the surface. things that we missed long ago and not just yet to be discovered for this release. i would gander it is because they are good sports and are the kind to let something go undiscovered for the fun of it or to see if someone might still crack a mystery from lets say Geogaddi - all these years later ...

i think that despite a profound concern for creating serious music, they also possess a very solid and healthy sense of humor about it all - its just incredibly subtle.

for instance, turns out they are working in secret with Ikea now ... i am blowing the lid on this one!

And, Kanata is a small city west of main Ottawa. Though technically, part of Ottawa now (like Toronto's GTA)

(begins devising way to spray-paint ᑲᓇᑕ on the "Kanata" sign) 8)

I was wearing my new BoC t-shirt picking up some Thai one night, and a middle-aged white dude stops me up and says "Beeee-ohhhhh-ceeee, is that Blue Oyster Cult?!?!" he was really quite excited...until I told him it was Boards of Canada "oh...what the hell is that?"
