Seems like an appropriate time to ask, what type of turntable do you have? Any recommendations for someone just getting into vinyl for the first time?

Not exactly the right forum section to ask dude but yeh..... I own a few I DJ with either my Stanton STR8-150's which are also really cool for just spinning records or my Technics 1210 Mk3's...... But for general listening I have a Vintage Marantz 6300, imho it's better to go and get a vintage TT other than something new like a Project etc.. They are usually cheaper but just as good quality.

I bought the first when the Warp20 box set came out, for 747 goodness (it wasn't originally reported that this track would also be available on CD/download (I forget which...)). I ended up buying a second about a year later, after my vinyl collection started getting out of hand... and I realised how much fun you can have with 2 ^_^

Technics are indestructable, and a good investment if you're getting into vinyl, imo. Perfect.

Pioneer PL-530 is the one I got for my new setup in celebration of TH. Now I see it was a good investment..

I'm stuck with a 1988 SHARP SG-N50CD. :c

Technics SL-DD33. Nothing special, but sounds great. Auto cueing and speeds are all functioning perfectly.

I've had 1200MK2's off-and-on now for awhile. They're lots of fun to fix up. Since they discontinued it, I'm sure the availability of parts will start to drop.

My latest MK2 is currently in pieces. I've yet to listen to anything on it, let alone TH.

A Kenwood KD-550, seldom used because I prefer my music with headphones and with headphones I like to get up and move around.

More accurately, this is my turntable:



Supports 24+ bit lossless audio. Listening to a (proper) vinyl rip on this thing is just like listening to it from the turntable.

And the difference between 24 bit and 16 bit audio is very difficult to discern (much more subtle than lossless vs MP3 which can be discerned with good ears on well produced records quite easily) that it's more of a thing you feel than a thing you hear and I'd rather just listen to the CD rip in the first place and not have to deal with an audible amount of noise/crackle.

For me, its not so much the clicks and pops that make me listen to vinyl. Its the ritual of placing a record on a turntable, and committing fully to listen to the album. Not that you can't do that with digital files, I just enjoy the physicality of vinyl. The big artwork, the shiny, pristine reflection of the vinyl. A bit fetishist perhaps, but I feel music deserves that degree of worship

No, don't get me wrong - I understand the appeal completely, that's why I own vinyl records in the first place (aside from listening to them) - to do the same thing if I feel like it.

It's not just vinyl records. Digipack CD's give me the same feeling as the vinyl ritual, especially if they're the kind with booklets/a bunch of extra art inside. The MHTRTC Digipack is beautiful, even though it lacks anything inside other than the CD and a single extra fold with the kid on it. I would argue that a Digipack CD that's been given lots of love and extras inside is easily as good as vinyl record and gives the same sense of physicality commitment. Jewel cases are an abomination and I hate them.

Get a Technics 1200 MK2+, a decent cartridge, and a decent preamp and you will never ever regret it.

I still think a decent second-hand Rega Planar is a great affordable turntable. I had a couple of Dual 505s and a Pro-ject 2, all of which served me very well, before investing in the Gyrodec.

I use 2x Technics 1210 MKII's with Ortofon Concorde PRO S cartridges. Can't go wrong with 1210's or 1200's, built like tanks and great sound. I've seen a 1210 get dropped down some stairs and still work fine. I think they're a little harder to get hold of now due to being discontinued but well worth the money.

Each and every time I drop in on Ian and his Mrs, I do tend to dribble a little at this wondrous piece of kit. Just a lovely, lovely thing

Yep. 1210's too. Pretty much exactly the same thing apart the colour.
1200=Silver U.S
1210=Black Europe/Outside of U.S
