If you were to choose one of Boards Of Canada's unreleased albums, which one would you want and why would you want it?

For me it'd probably be Play By Numbers.
Seeing as I love My Bloody Valentine and BoC, this seems like the perfect mix of the two - judging by the sample we've got.
(why won't you release it, boc.. why?!!)



Oh and one of the songs has the best title ever.
"Infinite Lines Of Colorful Sevens" 9 minute and 18 seconds of a psychedelic shoegaze leviathan.
I want it.

In terms of albums - Play by Numbers, Hooper Bay, and Acid Memories
Play by Numbers because of the different style, Hooper Bay because the sample sounded really haunting and I really like that kind of sound, Acid Memories because well...the name makes me think it sounds more psychedelic and ambient at the same time.
As for tracks - Spiro because of the broken up vocals and the last track from the Warp10 set because of the vocal samples, it really fits in.

I think I'd pick Catalog 3 because
1) It appears to be a drone/prog synth type LP and I like that type of music
2) Mike and Marcus were 17 and 16 when they recorded it and the other members might have been even younger, so it would be unique to hear what was not only the bands first album but recorded when they were about the age I am
3) It is the longest of the Music 70 releases, which means more material which can't be bad because it's BoC

Will Play By Numbers truly be an 100% shoegaze album though? The Jockey slut described it as "boasting a My Bloody Valentine influence in places, shifting further into electronics in others". I'd imagine it being more akin to Seefeel or something.

As for the topic itself, Closes vol. 1, if not for the interesting cover and supposed Godever track then for the longer tracklist in comparison to the other early albums.

CLOSES VOL.1 because of a strange vibe... i feel like theres a connection between IABPOITC and this album... i dont know why! I also love the artwork

Hooper Bay, just because it's probably the closest thing to the sound we know and love. We already have most of Closes Vol. 1 and Play by Numbers anyways (R35TT)

All of the unused songs that were going to be on Geogaddi. There must be some real masterpieces in that enigmous bundle.

Based on what unreleased material we know exists, Play By Numbers. While I respect Opothecary's opinion, I do not believe Random contains as much, if anything, from the unreleased material as he does. The boys have implied (well, mdg has) that there are many compilations to draw material from not just the ones we what we know about. I've always believed Random consists of material from more of these kinds of compilations than of actual material from known releases.

The music that has become available on the net in the past is just a small portion of the band's recordings from those years."

I must hear Infinite Lines. My niece is named Rachel Emily and I call her Remmy, so Remmy Kid is also a must hear for me.

Based on the similarity of B14 to New Seeds and the PBN sample to Campfire (specifically tracks like Dayvan Cowboy), do you believe they may have included songs from or based on the Music70 releases?

Ok, I've been meaning to post this for a while but held back, mainly due to the slightly embarrassing implication. If this is the wrong thread, then I'll happily add it to another, but as the topic of early releases has cropped up again, here goes.

I'm originally from north Manchester, UK. I used to spend most of my time in the late 80s/early 90s in a record shop called Vibes, in a small-ish town called Bury. It was a great independent record shop, part of the Chain With No Name (I think), and it always carried an interesting array of promo materials/small label releases, as well as the odd appearance by minor pop celebrities. At that time, I was an ex-80s goth, starting to get interested in the ambient/techno scene (I bought CDs and vinyl based on labels - Planet Dog especially, and the obvious stuff such as Orbital). Vibes carried a limited stock of 'Electronica' releases at the time, restricted to a couple of racks at the front of the shop, and coupled with the frequency of my visits, I could reel off the contents of those racks pretty much by heart at the time. As I was always digging for stuff based on an educated guess as to whether I'd like it (labels were a good guide, and I couldn't afford many blind purchases), there were certain items I always skipped over. I can still remember the covers though, and I am almost certain that Play By Numbers was in there (CD). The cover always stood out. However, as I couldn't make any link to the artist, I passed it by, and usually ended up with some overpriced crap. Now, I kick myself!

So, my admission is that I probably had a copy of Play By Numbers in my hands at one point. If anyone else knows of similar artwork (child's face with numbers in the eyes taking up the majority of the cover), then I would be very happy indeed to be proved wrong! When I started listening to BoC years later (around 2000), I used to check the old website that Fredd-E took on, and regularly tried to hunt down a copy of Play By Numbers, as I considered it to actually be out the in the wild, so to speak. Maybe it still is.

So, that's my story. It needs a re-release

Um, this is eerie. I have an almost identical story that I've posted on this site before, a couple of times, only swap Derby for Manchester. One copy, that I saw just the once, before I knew the significance of it. I wonder how likely it is that we saw what we think we saw?

Well, I'm glad it's not just me then! At the time, I was in Vibes two or three times a week (almost OCD behaviour), and I swear that was the cover that always caught my eye. I've never seen anything similar, and given the genre of the racks I was browsing, then it seems to add up (no pun intended). I've been a long time stalker on here, but had no idea that you've a similar tale MrMessiah. Where did you see it? Was it part of the same Chain With No Name, by any chance?

This is the thing, I can't 100% remember if it was the CWNN shop or another one, it's so long ago. But it'd make sense it was the CWNN shop (whatever it was called, it's long gone) cos they were the only place that had any decent electronic stuff and I was there religiously.
