We don't have a general thread for this band, of which many posters consider one of their favourites. So lets discuss!

I know genius is an over-used word, but....

He's also endearingly bonkers. I can't help thinking the "britpop was an MI5 conspiracy" line might have something to do with the "I took loads of drugs with Primal Scream" thing.

I've said it in another thread, but seeing MBV live this year was one of the best live music experiences of my life. You Made Me Realise wasn't just loud, it really was strangely intense - a guy next to me in the crowd burst out laughing during the Holocaust section; others were shaking and looking shell-shocked.

The line-up of Primal Scream that KS played with was one of the most ferocious rock n roll bands ever too. Josh Homme has said as much too. I read an interview with Innes from Primal Scream (no slouch of a guitarist either) a while ago talking about playing with Shields - the two of them would compete to make the loudest, most evil sounding racket on stage - Innes would make the most horrendous noise he could, then he'd look on as KS would go even louder and even nastier while apparently barely touching his guitar...

This was a cool article/interview but the comparison to Marth Rothko makes me cringe.
Rothko designed large versions of paint tile thingies you see at Home Depot.
Shields, Coisog, Googe and Butcher are more analogous to, say, masters of the Renaissance???

Also MBV used feedback on only a couple tunes. Most of the "noise" you are hearing is from EQ and overdrive.
"I purposely melted my mind" is going to be my senior quote, by the way.

You are very wrong about Rothko. I think it's a logical comparison.

Something like a seminal drone or minimal synth artist would be better compared to Rothko than My Bloody Valentine. I could see Joy Division, Monoton, Suicide, Panasonic all being compared to Rothko and me agreeing with it. But something like My Bloody Valentine, really?
I'll admit that calling his paintings "paint tile thingies" is a gross simplification, and /some/ of his stuff can be quite affecting. But it doesn't interest me.
MBV are better compared to something crazy detailed and abstract like IDK Hannah Hoch or Kurt Schwitters than they are my original comparison of the Renaissance masters (I was being hyperbolistic, of course, because the band were incredibly formidable on *my* musical development), or the interviewers comparison of Rothko.

Of course, my opinion on "which painter or style is MBV most like and/or most unlike" is not the be-all end-all.
Personally, I hear the abrasiveness and murkiness of MBV's sound pallete coming together into beautiful, amplified, monstrous collaged replicas of pop-song structure. Which I guess is comparable to photocollage and merz, to my mind, as well as the broader Surreal and Dada thing I suppose (mind my knowledge of Art/Art History is a bit limited).
But you might hear MBV or music as a whole in an entirely different way and thus you might think it, see it, imagine it in an also entirely different way.
I'd just like to know *how* other people perceive music differently.

He just seems like a really down to earth, unassuming and caring person. He cares about what he does and ensures its going to be the best he's got. Very similar admirable outlook to Boards (yet another comparison). Would love to go for a pint with him and talk post punk and such.

It's also really annoying how this is the only pro recorded live footage of them. Not that I don't love the bootlegs, but as a band whose primary attraction is the live "event" they need more properly captured stuff. Love how Bilinda is crying at the end of this:

You can find a German bootleg of Loveless on vinyl at discogs for 15 pounds. Bargain. It sounds really good too. Well worth it. You won't find a decent creation pressing for less than 50/60 quid these days.

i was all kinds of mixed up, upset and depressed yesterday but my bloody valentine kind of helped so thanks bilinda, colm, debbie, kevin... and the 20 engineers that worked on loveless lol
shoegaze is really my go to music when i feel that way but my bloody valentine in particular when it's over some relationship issue heh heh
can we also talk about "angel"? that track really floors me the most out of all 3 of the glider outtakes.

I'd forgotten about these. Somewhere I have a that session on cassette recorded from the radio! I did that a lot in my teenage years.

Im sure many people did, I know I used to record the radio as a kid too! All the tracks on that session sound so good! Especially I Can See It
