just wondering what the difference is, i have a little bit better than basic knowledge, just trying to get a grip on this.
how i understand it is: original metal work, they just used the original plates to repress the records
re-cut from the original DAT though, sounds like it was remastered?
is that correct?

As far as I understand it...

The original metalwork is the original metal plate used to press the vinyl. The recut metalwork from the original DAT is just new metal plates being produced to press the vinyl. I don't believe there has been any remastering, otherwise I'm sure that would've been noted.

It's quite simple.

First of all, there has been absolutely no remastering - of any kind - on the three albums.

When pressing vinyls, the original master disc loses a bit of its quality after each vinyl is pressed. That means that the first record pressed out of each run will sound a little better than the last record pressed by the same master disc. Think of how many records have been pressed by the master discs for, say, Geogaddi. Add in the fact that it is now over 11 years old!It's taken enough of a beating that this run of pressings wouldn't sound quite as good as the first run of pressings. That's assuming Warp even still had the original sitting around somewhere.

So, in order to preserve sound quality, a new master disc was cut.

TL;DR: The music has remained untouched, the fidelity is just marginally higher.

that all makes sense. still a tiny bit strange that they would only re-cut GEOGADDI? (unless the original metal work was lost or stolen) i mean, one could argue that MHTRTC is almost as good an album as GEOGADDI, that metal is a lot older too(if they are actually using the original metal plates)...just wondering what the story is (not that it matters too much)

Do you remember hearing about that warehouse fire that happened to Warp, a year or two ago? I wonder if it was destroyed possibly...

I believe the warehouse fire happened at the PIAS distribution centre. I don't think they store the original metalworks there.

Like it's been said above - I would think it's simply been recut solely to maintain the high fidelity.

I kinda figure it as... if you're gonna re-cut one of them (assuming its too expensive to recut errthing) then it might as well be geogaddi right

That's one of those opinion based things without a definitive answer surely. I would have said MHTRTC. Unless it's sales based, but I don't know which outsold the other, so...(?)

what's funny is, (having never heard the vinyl) i was expecting GEOGADDI to be the best listen.......... (not that it wasn't amazing) but MHTRTC really blew me away the most, first listen through all of the reissues.

When the reports came out, it was said as a possibility that some records may never be physically purchased again, so it's possible the metalwork was destroyed on a lot of recordings. Who knows?

I find it strange that only Geogaddi was recut as well, but I'm excited. Finally broke down and bought the bundle last week.

I dunno, when Devil in the Details started playing I was blown away by how crisp it sounded. Still, I've yet to hear MHTRTC.
