It has just been confirmed that Lou Reed has died aged 71.

Very sad news. If you don't like the Velvet Underground, you're wrong.

Dear Lou Reed,

You were the king of my favorite era of nyc history and even though you were very talented I was never as huge a fan as maybe I should have been, not to say I don't enjoy VU a bunch.

However once my mom said she saw you in washington square park in the mid 70s and it was like her favorite story to tell. I found out years later she was totally on acid.

So that's how I'll always remember you, as the cool guy my mom may or may not have seen while frying on acid.

I almost forgot to say. I was quite startled by this thread when I can home earlier today.
We can cross him out for that long-awated-releases-streak this year got going on.

Did love one tweet I saw today, putting the Daily (Sodding) Mail in it's place:

'The Daily Mail are using Lou Reed as a cautionary anti-drugs tale. Don’t do drugs or you may die at 71, respected the world over.'

Don't want to turn this into a Daily Mail hating thread, but seriously what is it with their opportunist death related articles to peddle their own poisonous vitriol. That Stephen Gately article by Jan Moir was so disgusting.

Sooooo bummed about this. Sunday Morning and all..

I'm bummed out the last thing he did was with metallica. But I'm not really bummed he died... I mean he was old it seems natural? I'm happy he lived a long and it seems fullfilling life.

My knowledge of the Velvet Underground is pretty much limited to listening to Nirvana's cover of "Here She Comes Now", but now that this happens I think I should probably listen to some "real" VU recordings. But where should I start? I know nothing about their discography.

As to where to start, they only released 4 studio albums and you can't go wrong with any of them to be honest. They're all different but all great:

...& Nico is probably the best place to start. 1st album, it's the sound of 60s pop being warped into something nastier and darker. You'll probably have heard a lot of it already.

White Light/ White Heat is the "difficult" noisy 2nd album, harder going than the others. All 17mins + of Sister Ray isn't for everyone.

S/t 3rd album - probably my favourite; John Cale has left the band, taking away a bit of the experimental, noisy edge, but the songs really stand up (Pale Blue Eyes is gorgeous).

Loaded - much more "standard" 60s/70s pop/rock - lots of people really don't like it, but Lou's songwriting is great. By far their "easiest" album.
