Anybody here visit regularly?

I hate large chunks of 4chan but have had great discussions and learned of many great albums through the /mu/ board.

Used to browse regularly; trying to avoid going on there until this whole ian watkins thing dies down. Seems every other thread on there is about him at the time being.

It's alright I guess. A good way to discover new music if you look in the right places.

it's an aggressive black hole of musical hatred, I mean no wonder the comments on like Needle Drop videos are so dicky, when you fight about music to anonymous people you become a dick about it because the other people aren't given a face or a name.

People need to calm the fuck down, realise that the people you're talking to are exactly like your friends. In fact you probably have more in common with the people you're talking to on the net than your own friends. Would you treat your friends like dirt? No, then don't fucking treat people on the internet like dirt.

I think you're thinking of /v/ man, which is an aggressive black hole of video game hatred.

People on /mu/ are generally pretty chill. We fuck with each other on occasion in the same sort of manner guys usually do but it's never serious. I've never been treated like "dirt" there. If you could point out an example of someone being seriously a dick on /mu/ in a thread where nobody blatantly acknowledges it and condemns the fucker then that'd be appreciated. Otherwise, this remains a "citation needed" scenario. The kind of comments people make there that are often misunderstood as things other than jokes are about on par with your "why live when people like those on /mu/ exist", which I have to ask - are you serious with that or are you exaggerating?

What happened, you went to /mu/ once and a dude called you a pleb or something, right? Seeing as your recently played tracks are from OK Computer on your last.fm thingy then that seems possible - not putting down that album, just saying that's one people usually target often because it's really overrated to many there, it's been discussed way too much, and it's often on the charts of entry-level /mu/tants right next to other albums that are commonly thrown around there leading someone to believe that person might not have any original taste (though this varies greatly from person to person on both the end of the person posting the chart and the person judging).

Or maybe it was people who thought Tomorrow's Harvest wasn't very good? I don't know where you stand on that but I know when I shared my opinion about it, I upset a handful of others who somehow are intimidated by the opinions of others about art.

This is odd considering unless I know the person and identify their trip, they're not my friend, and this goes for everyone else there due to the nature of the anonymous imageboard...so the analogy isn't really that applicable.

Anyways, your response is pretty funny and ironic. I frequent that "shit hole" (great generalization of not just every board on 4chan but the internet as a whole, by the way) where people apparently "treat others like dirt" and yet I don't believe I'm upset, or angry, or spouting hyperbole, or generalizing a group of people regarding what they do and how they do it, so perhaps I - the regular /mu/ poster - am not the one who needs to "grow the fuck up". I'm lonely, depressed and angry at a lot of things as well dude, one glance at my Facebook page would be evidence enough for that, but I tend to direct my anger towards things that deserve it. In the event I hear about some sort of forum or group you belong to I'm not going to just shit all over it when it's unwarranted and provide zero evidence for why I'm doing so - no offense intended and not meaning to sound condescending here, but that's what has occurred.

As for the "why are you here" part, I wasn't going to ask that nor do I really care why you are here. It appears you're here, in this thread specifically, to complain. Complain about something that doesn't even apply to you if you don't visit /mu/, does it? The reason I and MANY of my friends go there is because it's one of the few places you can hold a discussion about IDM/Ambient Techno related music and people know what they're talking about. They're familiar with Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Telefon Tel Aviv, Squarepusher, Future Sound of London, etc. and in my personal experience, they're more entertaining (in terms of having a discussion with) and friendly than the people at WATMM. So, considering this board isn't tremendously fast in terms of activity, I like to talk about music there. That and there are jokes I can make there that if I make here people overreact to an extreme degree about (in my opinion) - but the fact that this board is (or was, really, with the exception of a few people with the most notable being Nicole and also Mexicola who is just the nicest dude ever) so polite all the time is one of its appealing features. Anyways, there are other things I'd like to say but they're not appropriate nor are they important so I'll just jump to the end and say to each their own and please try not to do this sort of thing. It isn't very nice. There's a difference between disagreeing, sharing your opinion and how you responded.

I was venting a little and probably took it to the wrong place. I guess I could play the "don't take me so seriously" card, but yeah.

few things tho;

a) I'm not a huge fan of OKC either, In Rainbows is their best record, and OKC in particular is pretty weak in comparison to the rest of their discogs.
b) I feel that a lot of /mu/ mass consumes music too much, doesn't let too much settle. Always about the big new thing and fads. I dunno. Too much emphasis on things like rating, Pitchfork, Needle Drop, In the Aeroplane over the blah blah shitty folk punk (lol) etc etc.
That and I think Death Grips are just ok overall. The Money Store is the shit though.
c) I've been there more than once, I'd call myself a semi-occasional visitor.

also I kind of find the idea of "musical superiority" rather childish. Everyone has their own tastes no matter if they're into popular or underground music.

to wrap this up, I visited /mu/ again today.

It's chilled out a lot since I last visited, and has quite a few cool IDM/Ambient threads there.

When did you start going there? my memories are from like 4-5 years ago, so I dunno why I really went out on it like I did. I guess all the annoying kids moved to reddit or something because like you said, it's a pretty cool place now.

I even posted my soundcloud and had some rappers contact me, wanting to use my stuff to rap over.

It's okay. I get that you were venting. The "musical superiority" thing with the pleb/patrician shit is a joke but there are a few assholes who take it seriously. Normally people hate them there. I also agree that they let things like P4K influence them too much. Personally I don't buy into P4K, I prefer individual critics and people more like Piero Scarrufi and not Anthony Fantano...that's just me though. Anyways, it's all good man, your statement just came off as very excessive, that's all. It can get like that on occasion, but for the most part I don't have any problems there and it's just a great place to learn about music I would have not learned about otherwise. I understand you being in one of those moods where you're just fucking pissed, it happens to me often.


I've been going to /mu/ for many years now. There will be surges when it gets really negative sometimes, particularly when things like Random Access Memories are released, but for the most part people are chill. Your statement though is actually totally true about the video games board if you replace "music" with "video games". Those people are fucking insane.


My biggest complaint about /mu/ (and people there feel the same way) is that there are a lot of people who just listen to mu-core (as in the really talked about, really fad-ish stuff) and that's it. They don't really have original tastes. Their charts are full of the same old shit. I made sure that my chart wasn't remotely like that:

Yep. Not all the time.. but every once in a while they have good threads, it's mostly shitposting and circlejerking though.

That, I promise you, was atypical. Hence the reason one guy said "thread worsened for no reason" and all of the people saying "this thread is now autism general". Really not sure what happened there, though it was actually the first time in a chart thread I've received that sort of response, having posted that chart about 40 times now.

Plus it's weird how a good portion of people from /mu/ have their music taste boxed into a select collection of albums that people refer to as "/mu/core"

/mu/core is just the classification that albums frequently discussed and appreciated there get, it's not like it's "their" music taste, unless someone's just a fucking pleb who listens to nothing but what everyone talks about there - could be considered a particular form of hipster
