Anyone here watch 'Tribe' on BBC2?
Superb viewing. Bruce Parry is a legend!
Check some of the video clips here and you can even watch episode 1 and 2 in full. I highly recommend.

Yeah. its the biz. I find it especially interesting cause I visited a Masai village in Tanzania recently, but this was more of a organised tourist thing - no blood drinking for me thanks very much!!! There is criticsm of the programme from some quarters who think that the show is exploitive and patronising and is more about Parry himself than tribal people. Cant say I agree with those views cause i think it is fascinating viewing.

Yeah ive heard these comments but i find the whole show fascinating and amazing and dont see it as being about him at all, other than the obvious stuff as hes the journalist!

Since i moved to the woods last year i see television with a dish antenna, BBC 1&2 is not included, in the very large package, damn.

It was amazing. We had to pay suggested donation of 15 Dollars each to gain access to the village which is an valuable inititive set up by the government to help support the Masai people. We also brought some pens, colours and paper for the children who were all in the village school and gave us a welcome song when we entered. Got to see the inside of their huts which were really tiny.The head of the household -i.e. the man - gets a corner to himself and the rest have to squash in together. He also can have as many wives as he likes (depending on number of cattle and how high he can jump) but has to wait until he is 28 to marry, where as the females can be married much younger than that.
It was the real deal in the sense that the villagers were obviously resident and conformed to the the traditions and rituals of the Masai tribe. However, part of me was uneasy that the thing is staged and that the chief and his sons are more than likely creaming off some of the profits eventhough the money is meant to be put into a collective pool that is distrubted to all Masai villages. maybe I'm cynical, but the chief's sons' knowing how to use our digtal cameras and having theri own mobile phones means that they might be benefiting more than the others in the village who didnt go to secondary school and learn a European language. Also, there is the moral issue of the Masai ways being tarnished by tourism, which I contibuted to, and how this contrasts against the obvious benefits of encouraging development (i sound like malcom from Viz's Modern Parents)!!!!!

really enjoyed tribe, found it tricky to watch in certain places but found the longer i watched the more comfortable i became with the blood drinking and the ceramonial whipping!! OUCH,
looking forward to next episode.
