Just heard about
this. Genuinely shocked and saddened.
Appears he died of an overdose, aged just 46.
One of the greatest actors of our time - such a waste.

A friend of mine is taking a screenwriting class, and apparently her professor was personal friends with Hoffman (he's from a suburb of our beloved city.) Today he was talking about him, and mentioned that he "didn't even know Phil was doing heroin." Such a devastating reality to be hit with out of the blue. You can sleep soundly thinking somebody's alright, and without warning they turn up dead. Heartbreaking.

Such a waste of talent, he was one of the greats of our time and he went so early. One of my favourite scenes by him:
