first of all, i searched all over for a thread about this and couldn't find one, so please forgive me if this has already been discussed in depth.

i have always wondered, from listening to the bootlegs and seeing the low res pictures of them playing live, how it all works. i guess i can imagine broadly they are triggering samples (as i see in the rack case at least a couple of akai s2000 or s3200's, which i dont really understand how they work since i was a child in the 80's and 90's and wasnt making music back then), i see theres a yamaha keyboard that marcus is playing, i'm guessing triggering samples on the akai unit. but, from listening to the recordings, it sounds like there are loops that are being sequenced, how are they sequencing them? what is all the other rack gear they have other than the akai samplers?

any ideas or speculations?

how do they live?

Basic arrangements in something like ableton, key samples loaded up ready to fire into the mix when required and various outboard stuff all patched into a mixing desk/interface.

after dropping at least 5 tabs of LSD they connect their pineal gland to an amplifier and think of really nice music.

As interested as I am in this question, I am willing to bet it is not as fantastical as we like to believe. They're brothers who happen to make amazing music, but aside from that, I bet they live their lives just like regular old "blokes"

Can you imagine?.... sitting there drinking your beer minding your own business when all of the sudden these two walk in and sit at the table next to you. What would you do? What would you say? I cant help but think I would act like a douchy little fanboy and they would probably get annoyed

I did have hope, but that's faded. I'm an usually fairly optimistic about most things but BOC playing live is one thing I don't invest too much time thinking about, as it can be slightly depressing lol.

for the record the only software that has been explicitly mentioned in their interviews is Logic. they were clear on how after starting to use computers more after Music Has The Right... they felt the process of making their music suffered and they went back to just using the computer at the end of the process to sequence.


they also said in either a Geogaddi or Campfire interview that if they play live again they want to have their friends on stage to so they can use more instruments...

so it would better reflect the way they make the music in the first place

Actually, if I had heard of them back in 1999, perhaps I wouldn't even have gone to their shows, because I'm living a bit far from Scotland and maybe would have thought "They'll tour Europe and have lots of other concerts, so why go to ATP just for one concert?" I don't think a lot of fans would have believed it in 2001 that ATP was their last live show (we can only hope it wasn't).

I'm guessing the version of their live show we've head on those three bootlegs are probably different to what it could have been beforehand. The Warp10 Party would be the only event that could have been similar to DJ sets (or akin to an Aphex Twin show) in terms of their general setup, something I'd draw from the kind of setup Warp would have given their artists in general for that kind of event.
However, going by this picture from their show at the lighthouse party, I'd be surprised if there wasn't quite a bit more going on, you can see quite a bit of analogue equipment of their own being employed, so a lot of it may include sequencers, while they fiddle about with the synths (and probably the sequences) live. Not to mention if they're doing this, they've got to make sure everything's right, it can't be easy having 4 or 5 machines working at once off sequencers in total synchronisation, so this'd probably keep them busy for the duration of the set. Hardly "triggering samples".
And, if this YouTube video of live visuals at ATP if anything to go by, they may also be working with this too.
As far as the instrumental side of ATP goes, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't too different to what was going on at the lighthouse party. With ATP, the act isn't given the same kind of limitations as a one evening event hosted by a label, it's independently organised, so BoC would have been allowed to do their live show in any way they desired.

I remember a story about how after one of their earliest gigs, the crowd rushed on stage and each took a key on the keyboard and the band members just sort of watched them play... don't know how true this is though
