Okay, so to make up for this, something serious that has recently been a recent sparrow in my mind: why San Francisco? What's the best suggestion for *this* city/ghost-city on the cover of TH?

It strikes me as such a bold statement for such an important piece of visual information after so long between albums; and departing from the more 'close range' quality of other cover artworks.

That started with Peter Serafinowicz mentioning it on BBC 6 Music in early 2012.

Well, I think the idea was to produce a more cinematic experience, and what says cinema more than a wide lens shot of one of the most iconic cinema cities in the world. I'd also argue the album is particularly expansive in sound, which lends itself to open spaced imagery. Just a thought...

I think that was a bit of an echo-chamber thing, actually. People on here and other places were saying "I bet the new album will be a double album" and he said that based on what talk was just generally going round. Of course, once he said it, everyone then assumed he KNEW something more official to base it off.

Yeah, I think these observations cut it. But I'm also drawn towards thinking that something as specific as this city... it just seems like such a bold statement to me.

3 factors draw immediate geo-visual attention to West Coast USA:

-San Fran cover
-Listening party
-Reach for the Dead video

These elements in such close proximity just seems so audacious to me. I would say that only IABPOITC gets as close to being so closely factually located to a time and place (Waco).

West Coast USA, abandoned theme parks and a "ghost" city of San Fran on the cover.

When I was in SF, the other year, I encountered a local sense of (dark) humour about "the earthquake" suspected of happening there at some point in the future...

That's helpful, thank you. I think I remember hearing Serafinowicz saying that now. I just wanted to know how high to set my hopes for a second part to TH!

What was the deal with the user Najm ad-Din Ayyub? He joined around the time I did, made a bunch of cryptic posts that led everyone to believe he was either one of the bros, or very close to them, then vanished. 99% of their posts have been deleted too. There have only been a handful of similar users with legit info like that over the years I've been around. Odd...

Just watched the film Collapse about Michael Ruppert, a former police officer and investigative journalist, labelled a conspiracy theorist and 'doomer' because of his views on peak oil, overpopulation, environmental degradation, economic collapse and so on.
Now familiar stuff to anyone taking an interest in the world over the past decade, but it's compelling viewing anyway, someone who has essentially sacrificed himself to his obsession and you end up thinking, if he's even half right, we're completely fucked. He talks about why we're screwed and what you can do about it after the collapse.
Sadly, now rendered poignant by the fact that he killed himself in April this year.
Anyway, mentioned it on this thread because I'd speculate that it's almost certainly an influence on Tomorrow's Harvest.
Reminded me of the books Endgame parts 1 and 2 by Derrick Jensen and documentary 'What a Way to Go - Life at the End of Empire (which Jensen appears in), which preceded Collapse and touches on the same topics. Both of which I thoroughly recommend, by the way.
I wondered at the time of TH's release if Endgame was an influence as well.
