Haha, Well they sent demos (Boc Maxima or Hi Scores?) to Sean Booth from Ae and that worked out great for them.

well hes almost truthful...they layered in some wild synth solo-y stuff on top as well.

It's kind of like "one chalk mark... and knowing where to put it" though innit.

Boc's version of Sir Prancelot is obviously just a mess about, something they created and sampled for fun, taking something that they would have adored themselves and breathing new life upon the original with the layers that they combined to put together their version. It's tongue and cheek at its finest. I wouldn't take it to seriously.

I thought he was saying that they didn't change the track at all except for adding the voice. The extra synths were recorded for that album which included a cover of the original tune you linked.

However you cut it, I don't think BoC had any pretensions of calling Sir Prancelot Brainfire an original tune any more than they would something like Iraq Says or Apparatus. OT was definitely meant for themselves and friends and not for public consumption...

it was pre any release. and as the fable goes....for friends and such. like little radio shows me and my bro did when we were kids. you piece together a story. [probably a big part, as ive said a few times, why the old stuff never gets released. too costly to release all the stuff they sampled/'borrowed. rendering the album incomplete].

anyways, i fully agree. it was all in fun. not meant to be mass produced.

Pretty sure we've only properly experienced their more minimal pieces and experiments via the two volumes of Old Tunes and the only reason we have them is that those odds n sods were compiled so close to the point in their career of breaking through - shopping around proper demos at the same time they made those. A bunch of it's older music but I think they were compiled around the same time as Maxima but with a little less spit and polish.

We're missing a huge chunk of this middle ground of their development that R35TT hints at (like Closes Vol. 1, Hooper Bay, etc) - that is probably more developed and less juvenile than OT is at times. That's the thing I love about those tapes - you can go from throwaways to classic material and back again over and over on the same tape. Very eclectic stuff. R35TT is way more consistent overall and seems to have a lot less obvious sampling from other sources.

I might be missing something here, but I don't think Paradinas was speaking negatively about BoC, and the "ripped off" part is not an accusation at all. What I got from that paragraph is that it was fun for him to know that the same record was somehow influential for BoC just as it was for himself. No one is under flak here, so there's no need to be so defensive.

I had thought they whimsically recorded the entire track for along time. Interesting to know.

I think of it now as some kind of Robert Rauschenbergian combine.
