Been trying to emulate the pads on Sundown using a variety of VST synths, closest I've got so far is by using the TAL U NO LX - a Juno 60 VST. Basically a saw wave with LFO modulation, it's getting there but it's still not right.

Obviously the BOC version is using an actual analog synth with all sorts of beautiful processing but I'm trying to strip that away and create the base sound.

Anyone got any ideas?

Waldorf made a ton of synths, are you referring to any one in particular?

Ah, that's the question isn't it! No idea but I've come close to that sound using a VST in Reason that was a Waldorf sim. If I had to guess it would be a Pulse or Microwave.

Interesting, I have Reason, didn't even think to open it as always thought the synths were shit. I'll check it out!

I think I found the plug in on either the Reason site or online under this Refill; pNo_Refill_Waldorf1-2.rfl or another called Waldorf Salad.

I don't think they use a waldorf.

Btw a pulse is a analog synth and a microwave is digital wave table.

Record label (warp) says they use a yamaha cs 70m. You can see it in the review notes for tomorrow's harvest on bleep.com which is warps official online shop.

I don't hear Waldorf at all. I have a a few waldorf synths and while you could get those sounds it does not have that waldorf character I don't think. It does not sound like wavetables so the microwave is out. It is played polyphonically so it's not the pulse (the character of filter is not right either). Sure, it could have been mono's multi tracked but, I don't think so from the timing.
To me, it sounds like a vintage Roland poly with multi mode filters unless it's filtered with hardware afterwards. Saying all that, it is smothered in big reverb so that is masking a lot of the synth sound.

It sounds like a warm analogue to me underneath all that reverb, the only cold you get is when the HPF sweeps.

2nd guess would be something by Elektron.

For the synth? Nah. They might have a Machine drum for some drum synthesis nowadays but I wouldn't bank on it.

I have the Analog 4 and some of the synth sounds and hats really sound like parts of TH.

I have the A4 too, it's an unreal synth and yeah it can easily do the BOC sound but it's not the synth used. They would have had to change their whole meticulous ethos to do a track all in the box. The reverb does not sound like the A4 reverb.
It would be possible to recreate the track to a degree though.

You never know though, they might have updated their studio equipment for modern alternatives, we're only guessing using the little knowledge we know about them and using a lot of assumption and probably fantasy ideas.
I still go by saying that the underlying synth is a Roland Poly (Juno,Jupiter 4) because of the faint character behind the post processing.
I'll fire up the Jupiter 4 tonight and have a go.

Yeah I'm pretty damn close with the Juno60. It just lacks that resonant bite that BOC have though.

drench in reverb, some nice rack, never heard a vst sound that good with verb.
