Does this piss anyone else off?

If you own an iphone or whatever, you have no choice, this crappy music by U2 (shittest band ever) will be automatically added to your itunes library. It isnt something you opt into, they just sneak it on to your device whether you like it or not.

It is their campaign to make it the biggest album release ever.. WTF?

What a load of bollocks!!! Fuck U2 and Apple too.

Even though this is an extremely minor annoyance, it does in fact piss me off!

Can't seem to link to it at the moment, but go read the article on The Quietus about the new U2 album. A fantastic read.

Though if they're going to put U2 on peoples' devices, at least let it be Joshua Tree or The Unforgettable Fire.

Great article, like the author I was a fan (still am, of everything up to and including Zooropa, they produced some great, great albums) and like the author, Bono just irritated me more and more over time.
Can't stand them now, the rank hypocrisy and insipid corporate crap they produce.

The Unforgettable Fire is so amazing. Hell, I'll probably listen to it tonight when I get home.

I think the phrase that hit the hardest on that Quietus article is that U2's older music gets harder and harder to enjoy with every passing year. It's hard to listen to, say, Pride, while still picturing that idealistic, slightly angry kid, and not this pretentious jackass preaching from the top of the world. I'm completely in favour of separating the art from the artist, but, dammit, Bono!

I'm actually kinda like U2 because I think they influenced my taste, or at least exposed me to musical elements I'd come enjoy with Boards of Canada. The atmospherics on tracks like Beautiful Day or Vertigo are the same type of atmospheres and moods I enjoy in BoC's music now. I remember thinking how I wish I could just have the instrumentals of those tracks so I could enjoy those synthy atmospheric moments over and over without Bono singing over them. I'm not a fan, and Bono's a giant douche, but I appriceate their influence on my taste and how I enjoy music

I once bought a phone and it was infected with bundled music. I think one track was cool. Unfortunately it had DRM so I couldn't save it.

So, you have my sympathy.

Sure, it's some sort of marketing ploy, but it's free music. Other businesses and services provide free stuff sometimes and it's usually welcomed! Is it hated because it's such a big business/it's U2?

The tracks aren't even auto-downloaded (at least they weren't on my device). They are playable links that you can play from the proverbial Cloud.

Sure, the smell of big business kinda rots the whole thing, but is it really that bad?

-Don't particularly care for apple products, but I do have an iPhone

No its not really THAT bad haha, I proabably sounded over the top a bit.. first world problems eh.. given free stuff whether we like it or not.

My understanding is that it is automatically added to your itunes account, therefore if you have automatic downloads enabled it will always end up on your device. Maybe im wrong about this? I dont use an iphone anymore.

a) There is no way that I know of to un-associate the album from your itunes account

b) If you make use of automatic downloads, the album will always download to your device. You can switch auto downloads off but you will be losing a feature you use just because U2 thinks you should have their album.

A phone / mp3 player is a personal device that we store music we want to listen to, we arrange the music as we please and therefor assured when we shuffle through our playlists we will have no nasty surprises of stuff we dislike.

If more bands and phone companies start doing this type of thing it would be a nightmare, constantly having junk music pushed to your device (personal space) like a relentless domino's pizza leaflet campaign through your home mail box.

Offering fans and aspiring fans a free album is great but damn, give them the choice if they want to add it to their itunes account or not at least.

Apparenlty this is also U2`s tactic to make it the biggest album release ever. Our itunes accounts are being used by them to make up numbers and to help rake in the $$$$ in the long run.
